„A door slides upward to expose the burrs completely for cleaning. It is a wonderful coffee grinder, and clamps down to a table in seconds, although I wouldn't want to grind my coffee right after grinding something stinky! Versatile, cleanable, simple and elegant: this is nice for bread bakers, all-grain beer brewers, and coffee nuts like me. Caveat: I don't know why, but this is the only Zassenhaus that has a 1 year guarantee, not 10.“

„I scanned the Web and found that there is a superior type of grinder called a "burr" grinder. Burr grinders are better than the spinning blade grinders because the bean goes through the grinder only one time. The beans are loaded into one compartment, proceed through a blade mechanism, and the grounds are then dispersed into a second compartment. This produces a more even grind.“

„Plate grinders clog easily but make fairly even grinds. Burr grinders wear down eventually, but result in the most even grind in home devices. The ideal burr grinder is a hand-cranked unit, like the famous German brand Zassenhaus models. I have had bad luck with electric models that need constant care and cleaning, and tend to break anyway.“

„To extract espresso properly it is essential to use a burr grinder and to grind per order. The two major types of burrs used are flat and conical. Conical burrs are desirable because they increase the surface area of each particle and the amount of flavor that can be extracted from the coffee. Since conical burrs have longer cutting edges, the burrs can rotate at lower speeds which reduces the heat created. Flat burrs should be replaced after 600 pounds of coffee have been ground and conical burrs should be replaced after 2000 pounds of coffee have been ground.“
