Yerba Mate - The Drink of the Gods (#)
„Yerba Maté supposedly does not contain caffeine, but rather a closely related compound called "mateine" which is a similar stimulant. Mateine is not as harsh to your body and does not produce the same addictive results. Others have claimed that the chemical compound within Yerba Maté is in fact caffeine, and to think otherwise is just wishful thinking.“

„While I was there, I bought a coffee machine, two large containers of coffee, filters and large jars of Coffee Mate. I wrestled them onto the plane home and I've been an caffeine addict ‹ rather, a committed coffee drinker ever since. I decided then and there I had to have a vice, and coffee won over drugs and promiscuous sex (neither of which appealed to me), and alcohol, (which isn't all that bad, when you are at a party, and never in excess).“

„One of the biggest tropical cash crops Europeans introduced in Latin America was coffee. It was the first real stimulant known in the New World outside of the South American yerba mate regions, and it came in the early 18th century -- shrouded in intrigue. In a couple of centuries it become a major plantation crop in Central America, the Caribbean and parts of South America, and it became woven into the fabric of our lives.“

„Physiological effects of caffeine on the human body aresomewhat understood and well documented. The main physiological effect of caffeine appearsto be as a stimulant of the central nervous system and most of the effects observed arebehavioral in nature. Caffeine is associated with an increase in intellectual activity, but this seems to be significant only when the individual is fatigued or bored. Similarly, caffeine has been linked with sleeping problems and although there is evidence to supportthis, the variation from individual to individual is considerable.“

„There has been limited research into the effects of topical treatments for humans, though also including a tea extract (polyphenols) rather than caffeine. The results are promising.“

„"Caffeine is the world's most commonly used stimulant, and it's cheap and readily available so people can maintain their use of caffeine quite easily," says Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at Johns Hopkins. "The latest research demonstrates, however, that when people don't get their usual dose they can suffer a range of withdrawal symptoms, including headache, fatigue, difficulty concentrating. They may even feel like they have the flu with nausea and muscle pain."“
