WPS#1431 The Industrial Pollution Projection System -- Part 2

WPS#1431 The Industrial Pollution Projection System -- Part 2 ()

„Figure 4.1 clearly illustrates the extreme sectoral variation in pollutant intensity, ranging from Fertilizers and Pesticides (ISIC 3512) with 105.3 risk-weighted pounds of TRI releases and transfers per $1,000 of product shipped, to Soft Drinks and Carbonated Water (ISIC 3134), with only 0.22 pounds per $1,000. Despite a few surprises, such as the fifteenth ranking of the Musical Instruments sector, Table 4.1 generally confirms the intuition that the most intensive sectors in terms of toxic waste per dollar of output are industrial chemicals, plastics, paper and metals. The middle-ranked sectors are associated with consumer products such as electrical appliances, textiles, and cleaning preparations, followed by the high shipment value (and consequently relatively low intensity) machine-tool industry, with the food and drink sectors filling the least intensive rankings.“

Cafe Campesino ...from crop to cup a Fair Trade Cafe Campesino ...from crop to cup a Fair Trade

„Much of Fair Trade coffee is organically grown. This means the coffee is grown and produced without the use of any chemicals, fertilizers or pesticides. In other words the coffee is grown in nature without chemical intervention.“

Bird Safe and Shade Grown Coffee Bird Safe and Shade Grown Coffee

„Shade grown coffee benefits song birds who use it as a natural habitat, reduces the need for fertilizers and herbicides, and promotes biodiversification.  Unfortunately, the production of a shade grown estate is almost 1/3 that of a non-shaded farm.  Therefore, there is an alarming trend towards technification or the planting of new hybrids in organized fields to maximize profits.  Approximately 150 bird species live on farms of shade grown coffee, whereas non-shaded coffee has as few as 20-50 species.  Between 1980 and 1994 the songbird populations have steadily decreased.  There are 70% fewer Tennessee Warbles, 30% fewer Baltimore Orioles, and 50% less Cape May Warbles due in part to technification.  However, these numbers and the causes for the decrease in bird populations has been debated heavily.  Until it is known if growing shade grown coffee is economically feasible, the trend towards technification will continue.“

„Maintaining optimum pH by liming is essential requirement for nutrition management in coffee. If proper pH is not maintained, the applied fertilizers will not be utilised by the plants effectively.“

Significance of Lime Application in Coffee Plantations (INeedCoffee.com) Significance of Lime Application in Coffee Plantations (INeedCoffee.com)

„However the major cause for worry in Plantations is the repeated use of ACIDIC chemical fertilizers year in and year out which drastically alters the stable pH. The above mentioned factors like constant addition of chemicals to the soil, coupled with high temperature, acid rain, industrial effluents getting into irrigation water and excessive rainfall or severe drought results in severe acidity build up in the soil system and affects the nutrient uptake of the coffee plantation. For instance; if there is a sudden downpour inside the coffee farm, just after the application of fertilizers, then a part of the fertilizer starts leaching downward, beyond the root zone of the coffee plant and ultimately reaches groundwater. The loss is not so much for the coffee bush, but the resultant accumulation of no degradable toxic metabolites within the soil system that can have a ripple effect on the flora and fauna of the region.“
