„"It is only fair that the farmers that grow the beans that supply the world's booming coffee market be able to share in the profits they've rightly earned," Stark said. "Its an atrocity that so many small farmers are being ripped off by corrupt coffee brokers and forced to live in poverty." Evidence of the urgency of the current crisis in coffee growing communities was expressed in a recent Wall Street Journal story dated July 8, 2002: "In lush coffee-growing regions from Central America to Africa, the collapse of world coffee prices is contributing to societal meltdowns affecting an estimated 125 million people, [resulting in] a combustible brew of unemployment, hunger and migration. Whole rural communities are disappearing." Stark's Resolution states, "In the context of the global economy, consumer choices affect communities and the environment throughout the world." Based on the 2001 National Coffee Association study, American coffee drinkers have the largest opportunity to effect these changes. It shows that 80% of adults in the US drink coffee, making us the world's largest coffee consuming nation.“

Fair Trade Certified coffee: brimming with benefits Through Fair Trade, more than half a million farmers and their families are earning a better income for their hard work—allowing them to hold on to their land, keep their kids in school, and invest in the quality of their harvest—so they can continue to grow excellent quality coffee for your morning brew. Direct Trade: another perk of Fair Trade Today's historic lows in world coffee prices have created a crisis for millions of farmers around the world. Most small-scale family farmers live in remote locations, and are dependent on local middlemen (known as "coyotes" in Latin America) to purchase their coffee, often at a fraction of its worth. Fair Trade guarantees farmers a set minimum price for their coffee and links farmer-run cooperatives directly with US importers, cutting out middlemen and creating the conditions for long-term sustainability.“

„According to a report by British-based charity Oxfam, carried by IPS, many children in some coffee growing areas in Central America and East Africa are seriously malnourished. Under the title ìMugged: Poverty in your coffee cupî, Oxfam proposed that the main processing companies (Proctor & Gamble, Kraft, Sara Lee, Nestle, Starbucks and Tchibo), which together buy over half the world's coffee produce, should pay higher prices for the bean.  Oxfam asked the biggest commercial enterprises to convert at least 2% of their total annual purchases into buying coffee grown in the ìfair tradeî way, and increase that percentage over the following years. The term fair trade was invented by the Fair Trade Labelling Organisation ó an international group seeking greater equity in world trade ó so that coffee workers can receive a dignified salary and sell their product to enterprises that authorise loans to farmers without access to credit, among other forms of aid.“

Fair Trade means an equitable and fair partnership between consumers in North America and producers in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. The chief concern of the Fair Trade movement has been to ensure that the vast majority of the world's coffee farmers (who are small holders) get a fair price for their harvests in order to achieve a decent living wage. Fair Trade guarantees to poor farmers organized in cooperatives around the world: a living wage (minimum price of $1.26/pound regardless of the volatile market); much needed credit at fair prices; and long term relationships. These fair payments are invested in health care, education, environmental stewardship, and economic independence.“

Transfair USA | Coffee Program (#)

„Today's historic lows in world coffee prices have created a crisis for millions of farmers around the world.

„As you sip your morning coffee or enjoy that afternoon espresso, do you ever think about where coffee comes from? Around the world, literally millions of people dedicate their lives to growing coffee. Unfortunately, the blessings of coffee don't always filter down to the people who grow it. Coffee farmers earn as little as a penny-a-pound for their harvest, and even during the years when crops do well and prices are high, the children of coffee growers go without much that we take for granted.“

„Leaves: The elliptical leaves of the coffee tree are shiny, dark green, and waxy.  The leaf area index is between 7 and 8 for a high-yielding coffee (Malavolta, 195 ).  The coffee plant has become a major source of oxygen in much of the world.  Each hectare of coffee produces 86 lbs of oxygen per day, which is about half the production of the same area in a rain forest (source: Anacafe).“
