World Bank Group | Agriculture & Rural Development | Executive Summary - Coffee Markets: New Paradigms in Global Supply and Demand (#)
„There are structural changes in demand both at the consumer level and at the industry level. These changes include stagnant overall growth in the traditional major importing countries, increased demand for soluble coffee, increased demand for differentiated and higher-value products, new technology allowing greater fungibility in coffee supplies, and geographic-generational shifts in the popularity of different types of coffee products. At the same time, in many markets there is increasing preference for espresso-style coffees that do not depend as much on the flavor profiles of high-quality washed arabica coffees. These shifts, and the strong competitive response of the largest producers, particularly Brazil, are reducing the demand for certain types and origins of coffee, leaving the worst-affected countries with large social and economic costs.“

„In several coffee-producing countries, coffee accounts for at least 20 percent of the total export earnings. By some estimates, approximately 100 million people are directly affected economically by the coffee trade. It goes without saying that with a crop of such significance for some countries, the destabilizing effect of the price crisis sparks concern precipitating bank failures, public protests, and dramatic falls in export revenues.“

„Another assumption often made about the decaf sector is that demand is stagnant. Again, while this assumption may have been true in past years, the Swiss Water Usage and Attitude Study indicated that a third of the specialty coffee drinkers surveyed were drinking more decaf than they were a year ago. "What this indicates to us," Alvo observes, "is that there is far more opportunity in this category than many of us have assumed. Further, the key to this potential for sales growth is quality."“

„Not only are farmers harvesting too many beans for stagnant demand, but some big coffee roasters, eager to maintain profit margins, have tweaked their blends, reducing the percentage of high-quality arabica beans and replacing them with cheaper coffee from robusta beans.“

„It is also helpful that while retail coffee sales are stagnant or even falling in many key national markets, out-of-home service has indeed been booming. This is accounted for by the growth in numbers of young urban drinkers who enjoy trendy coffee bars, by the advent of fast food coffee typified in the Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts chains, and the growing emphasis even in traditional fast food markets - such as that commanded by McDonalds - on fresh brewed coffee.“
