World Bank Group | Agriculture & Rural Development | Coffee Markets: New Paradigms in Global Supply and Demand, March 2004 (#)
„Since 1970, prices have averaged a 3 percent per year price decline for arabica coffees and a 5 percent decline for robusta. Nicaragua provides a stark example of the impact: Between 1998 and 2001 poverty rates increased by more than 2 percent among those farmers who remained in the coffee sector. In contrast, poverty rates among rural households as a whole fell by more than 6 percent. A similar picture emerges for primary school enrollment rates—falling by 5 percent for households that stayed in the coffee sector and increasing by 10 percent among all rural households.“

„(Also, Robustas such as these are now being used in filter coffee "high caffeine" blend since the caffeine levels are doubled in Robusta over Arabica. But this really isn't something I am going to endorse, or even investigate myself even though such brands as ShockCoffee are doing exactly this...) Also check out Nestle's description of Robusta -interesting!“

„Now small amounts (less than 10%) are rules of thumb, and its got to be good quality robusta (there is some out there. In fact I've tasted robustas better than some arabica beans I've been sent). Don't be a snob, it adds a little caffeine kick to a blend, and it gives you great crema and balances out the cup. I have blends without robusta in them that are great, but none are better than those blends which do contain Robusta.“

„In respect to green bean production, I can only foresee misery and heartache for those growers producing Robusta, and for those producing Arabica for the multinationals. I would like more scope to explain - I tend to agree with Oxfam’s argument, but not their solution to the problem.” - George Sabados, president Austral Asian Specialty Coffee Association, Australia“

„ While coffee can be grown from sea level to c.6,000 ft (1,830 m), and C. robusta is produced at low elevations in West Africa, the better Arabica grades are generally produced above 1,500 ft (460 m). Strong winds limit coffee production; coffee is often grown in the shelter of taller trees. A coffee tree yields its maximum sometime between its fifth and tenth year and may bear fruit for about 30 years.“

„For example, robusta coffee -- theother principal botanical species, which is used primarily in blended, canned coffees--normally has twice the caffeine content of arabica (specialty or gourmet) coffee. Afive-ounce cup of coffee will contain from 75 to 155 milligrams (.0026 to .0054 ounces) ofcaffeine, depending on the type of bean, brewing method and amount of coffee used. Thepercentage content in arabica coffee is the lowest in caffeine with 1.53%.“
