Virtual Coffee: The Songbird Foundation Project (#)
„What better way to raise consciousness on the issues of bio-diversity and sustainability than through the audiences of great musical artists? It is the Songbird Foundation's hope that by enlisting the support of musical artists and their audiences that we may more quickly create a dialogue on these important issues, and begin to create demand in the market place for sustainable products such as shade grown and organic coffee. We hope to create greater consumer interest and demand by asking popular artists to inform their audiences of the absolute necessity of developing a sustainable restorative economy, and how, by changing their own patterns of consumption, they can make what seems a dream come true“

„Sustainability is the only way to sustain high quality. Now Fair Trade is NOT the only answer but the thought that because it is certified or fairly traded or shade grown that it is crappy coffee is ludicrous and wrong. it used to be that way but not any more.“

„Economic, social and environmental sustainability is a hot topic, and for some, a profitable niche. This session brings us up to date on organic, fair trade, eco-friendly, Utz Kapeh and other initiatives. We'll discover what is happening in the markets for these coffees and what are the opportunities/pitfalls? We will briefly review the newest information from around the world and look at the key current issues from the producers' side: Can producers make the necessary adjustments?“

„The specialty coffee industry is brave enough to care as much about sustainability and social responsibility as it does about the bottom line. In this millennium year we have declared that what separates our coffee from the pack is that we care.” Katzeff first started roasting coffee at his Thanksgiving Café in Aspen in 1969. He moved to California in 1972 to become a wholesale coffee roaster and then, in 1982, served as the first editor of the SCAA’s newsletter. He served as the SCAA’s president in 1984 and also helped establish its Environment Committee.“
