Virtual Coffee: The Songbird Foundation Project (#)
„The agri-forests where coffee has traditionally been grown serve as replacements for the original Neo-tropical rainforests. By growing coffee under a canopy of diverse trees, the soil and water benefit, the birds and other creatures dependent on the shade habitat benefit, and, ultimately, people benefit from not having their resources destroyed and poisoned through over use of chemicals. (Much of the land we saw slipping away in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch was land denuded of trees.) By educating the coffee consumers about the long-term benefits of sustainably grown coffee, they come to realize the importance of coffee in protecting the environment. This empowers them and awakens in them an understanding that environmental issues are essentially issues of consumption.“

„But I always caution customers that you can't get $75 worth of quality in any coffee, there's no such thing. You're paying for the experience of quaffing the world's rarest and most expensive coffee. The palate would recognize it as Sumatran or Indonesian right away. It has earthy tones of natural processed Sumatra Mandheling.“

„CRS Notes: The Smithsonian's Bird-Friendly Certification process certifies that coffee bearing the logo above is grown under a dense forest canopy comprised of diverse species of trees. As its name indicates, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center is concerned primarily with the protection of the rare and endangered migratory birds that live in coffee growing regions. The organization works to achieve this goal through a series of rigorous standards governing the density and diversity of both rustic and planted shade trees in coffee growing areas.“

„NEW YORK, U.S.A. - Shade-grown coffee is grown under a canopy of trees that supposedly provides a far better habitat for birds and other life than the typical open plantation. But a study by researchers including those from the University of Georgia has shown that there shade-grown coffee farms may not be as beneficial to bird-conservation as we may have thought, reports the New York Times.“
