„Only buy as much coffee as you can use within a week-10 day period. Obviously its better if you buy from your local specialty roaster- they can sell small volumes direct to you in whole bean (or if you request) ground form. Its always better to buy the whole beans and invest in a grinder so you can grind beans as you need them. Ground coffee can deteriorate at a pretty quick clip...“

Supermarket Coffee vs. Specialty Store Coffee Supermarket Coffee vs. Specialty Store Coffee

„The other bean that makes up the small difference (about 8%) in this country's coffee consumption is called Coffea Arabica. It is the variety sold as whole beans in all specialty coffee stores and is the bean of choice for coffee connoisseurs as well as beginning coffee lovers.“

„For those lovers of the intense, pungent, near-burned coffees typically sold by specialty stores under the title French roast, two bargain supermarket versions did turn up. One, the Eight O'Clock Bean Coffee Dark Roast, was strikingly inexpensive at 23 cents an ounce but as decent a version of the extreme dark-roast profile as many specialty French roasts that sell for twice as much. The same low-grade, musty coffees may inhabit this bag as fill the red bags of the medium-roast "original" Eight O'Clock Bean Coffee reviewed earlier, but aggressive dark-roasting does wonders for low-grade Indonesia coffees, as many a specialty roaster knows. At 32 cents per ounce, the Trader Joe's French Roast was more expensive than the Eight O'Clock Bean Dark Roast but even more intense in its bittersweet expression.“

„Finally, we arrive at the only flat-out loser in the cupping. Eight O'Clock Bean Coffee suggests specialty with its whole beans and valve pack, but the generic nature of the blend, the package presentation, and, above all, the wretched quality, all say commercial. In fact, this coffee is sub-commercial, since the well-trained professionals at the large commercial roasters would never foist off a coffee as wildly fermented as this one on their customers. There was even a small stone in the bag I bought, a treacherous oversight that could wreck someone's burr grinder.“

„Details count in the hypercompetitive world of specialty coffee. If customers aren't happy at this Coffee Bean, there's a Starbucks across the street. These days there's a Starbucks across just about every street. Against this imposing foe, Sassoon and his partners are working up a head of steam for the chain they bought five years ago from the couple who'd made it a Los Angeles cult favorite.“
