View topic - Fair Trade Only...Is it possible? - Coffee Forum (#)
„Sustainability is the only way to sustain high quality. Now Fair Trade is NOT the only answer but the thought that because it is certified or fairly traded or shade grown that it is crappy coffee is ludicrous and wrong. it used to be that way but not any more.“

„The line, called Earth Fare Trade, features shade-grown, Organic and Fair Trade ™ Certified coffees from select farms around the world. Growing coffee under shade forces coffee to mature more slowly, allowing richer and more complex flavors to develop, and helps protect and preserve natural rainforests and indigenous plants and animals. Producing coffee organically ensures that no harmful pesticides or poisonous chemicals are used, which can be hazardous for the environment and the workers who are in direct contact with the chemicals.“

„Allegro’s commitment to sustainability goes so far that they go a step further than most, taking sustainable practices at face value. They really try to be aware of the whole sustainability picture - a complex subject - rather than making money off of consumers’ reactions to simplified buzz words such as “shade-grown,” “bird-friendly,” or “fair trade.” For instance, Knox explains that not all shade-grown coffee is beneficial to the environment. Shade trees, he says, are not native to many coffee-growing areas - and some farmers that only grow coffee with little shade in one part of the farm, leave large portions of the rest of the land as untouched forest. Often, these farms actually have more birds than there are on more densely-shaded farms.“

„As defined by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), "sustainability is growth which satisfies the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to satisfy their own needs." In other words, the big picture is key where sustainable coffee growing is concerned. The SCAA believes the coffee industry should take the lead in sustainable agriculture worldwide, involving everyone from producers to consumers.“
