„These days it seems most of the big R&G boys, especially those out of Italy, sell pods. Illy, Lavazza and segfredo all have pods. In Italy the roasters have quite a bit of sway with the machine manufacturers. Most of the roasters opperate a system where by a cafe signing up to a two year contract with a roaster for supply gets a machine "at cost" or even for free (for duration of contract of course!)“

„I'm happy with my Capresso EspressoPro (~$250; I got it on sale for $200). It makes good espresso using preground Lavazza or Illy with a minimal learning curve. I'm not much of a milk fan so I haven't tried much along the cap/latte side, but I have verified it makes satisfactory mochas.“

„I believe the crema problem is not freshness, but the fineness....the Lavazza's and Illy's even past the (long) 6 month expiry date will produce crema....but the taste will not be so good !“

„They are especially focussed on younger consumers in the big cities or in cities with a university. It started in the early 1990s with the Italian roasters Lavazza and Segafredo, both of which operate today some 100 espresso bars. Coffee shops and other espresso bars followed, many of them were operated by small private roasters. Today there are some 215 of these outlets all over Germany.“

„Italy has a highly fragmented market dominated by traditional cafés. The three main coffee roasters (Illy, Segafredo Zanetti, Lavazza) have all entered the Italian market through their own coffee chain concepts. Coffee chains in the French market are mainly composed of coffee bar concepts put forward by large roasters, such as Segafredo Zanetti (Segafredo Espresso) and Nestlé (Café Nescafé).“
