View topic - Air roasted or drum roasted? - Coffee Forum (#)
„I've played with and used consumer style hot air roasters (e.g. a West Bend Poppery) and also consumer drum style roasters (Alpenroast). The hot air poppers can be modified with a Variac (voltage regulator), allowing the roaster to extend roasting time to 12 to 15 minutes or even longer if desired, including a plateau between first and second crack to more fully develop the flavor profile. Small consumer drum roasters, by virtue of design, typically yield a 15 - 19 minute roast time.“

„Because people use their microwaves to make popcorn nowadays, there are tons of poppers of the correct design available from $2 to $5. The names to look for are the Poppery II, West Bend Corn Popper, Hamilton Beach Popaire 2, The Popcorn Pumper, and JC Penny brand. You can't be guaranteed they will work, but it's just a few bucks! The best one ever is the original West Bend Poppery, ugly as heck, but it will work forever...More Links for people in the Coffee Trade:“

„I used to keep a load of poppers around and give them away, but they are becoming harder to find (try your local thrift stores!) Anyway, there are great online resources and one of the best West Bend Poppery modification pages is Espresso Mio! “

„While this works, it produces many scorched beans. I recommend beginning with a West Bend Poppery II. This little hot air popcorn popper makes a great roaster. It has the air entering from the sides through vents and has a clear top which allows you to monitor the progress of the roast.“

„There are a few cheaper models out there but many are not 20 Amp. Don't use a low amp Variac to roast coffee! This one has an adjustable range of 0 to 130 volts. Yes, it is hard to believe but you can increase the volts.“
