Tea & Coffee 06/03 - Vietnamese Coffee and the Plight of the Montagnards (#)

„In 1992 the “Regreening of the Barren Hills Program” commenced, to reforest denuded areas (blamed on Montagnard rotational farming), followed by a 1998 “Five Million Hectare Reforestation Program.” Much of this “reforestation” involved planting coffee trees, almost all of them Robusta. It is unclear exactly how the phenomenal growth in Vietnamese coffee cultivation was funded, since no one now wishes to take responsibility for it. It appears to have been a combination of money from the Vietnamese agricultural bank, the World Bank, French, German, and Swiss governmental agencies, and programs sponsored by Nestle, Kraft, Sara Lee, and several coffee trading firms. At any rate, the Vietnamese government encouraged coffee cultivation in the Central Highlands, where Vietnamese farmers planted more than a million acres of Robusta coffee trees during the last decade of the 20th century.“

„Although many countries carry on a tradition of iced coffee beverages—there's Italy's caffe freddo, Malaysia's kopi-o, and the Thai and Vietnamese interpretations—the first iced coffees may have been drunk on a battlefield. As William Ukers mentions in his book, All About Coffee, "...the French colonial troops were first served with a drink made from coffee syrup and cold water on marches near Mazagran... Upon their return from the French capital, they introduced the idea, with the added fillip of service in tall glasses, in their favorite cafés, where it became known as café mazagran."“

Indiacoffee - Indian Coffee, Monthly magazine - Cover Story - Coffee Futures - The Brazilian Juggernaut (#)

„In the recent past Vietnam has officially declared its policy decision to roll its production capacity to a level of 10 million bags with a slightly more increased share of Arabicas. In our preoccupation with the Vietnamese miracle these last 2-3 years, we failed to observe the long-term implications of the changes that were sweeping the Brazilian coffee sector. During the decade of the 1990's, the Brazilian coffee production structure has been altered radically and new trends in production have emerged which have very important implications for the future of coffee worldwide. To appreciate this we need to consider the following:“

„These coffees sell for considerably less than all other coffees, including better quality robustas. I am told that production costs for Vietnamese robustas are about 20 cents per pound or less, compared to, for example, production costs of 80 to 90 cents per pound for the excellent "100% Colombia" coffees competing in the supermarket. And now the current episode: Commercial dealers and roasters have learned to steam the often foul-tasting Vietnamese robustas, removing the waxy covering of the bean and muting (but not entirely eliminating) the offensive flavor notes.“

„I am Vietnamese and growing up my dad always drank his coffee with a french press and condensed milk at the bottom and I ended up doing the same as I grew up and started drinking coffee. I never realized that there was an actual name for it and people called it "Vietnamese Coffee" Condensed milk makes the coffee taste so much better than regular sugar and milk, try it out with your dark roast coffee, it can't be beaten. Anyways, that's my story and now I sell coffee for a living.“

„Notable Beans: Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi (Celebes) Vietnam (5.8 million bags) French missionaries first brought coffee to Vietnam in the mid-1860s, but production remained negligible as late as 1980. In the 1990s, however, Vietnamese coffee production has been ratcheted up at a furious pace. At least one trader worries that the industry is growing too quickly for its own good. “The crop’s growing so fast that there’s not an equivalent growth in processing, so you’re looking at quality problems,” he said from Daklak, Vietnam’s main coffee-growing region.“

„"The Oxfam scheme is positive, as it truly reflects the current coffee-market situation, taking into account the livelihoods of farmers and producers," he said, adding that Vietnamese coffee growers have heartily welcomed the scheme. For farmers who have made the switch from farming low-grade robusta beans to high-grade, high-yield arabica, the investment is now beginning to pay off. But for many others who still farm low-grade beans, the pickup in prices has some distance to go before they see their fortunes turn around.“

„That all said... wow.  I'm not sure I've ever seen a town where the entire economy seems to be based so totally around good food, good books, good coffee, and occasional fits of modern dance.  I didn't expect a river town to be so lovely, but then I grew up in 1970s Cleveland, where the polluted river itself once actually caught fire.  But I haven't had a bad meal or a bad cup since I got here, whether it was in a Thai place in Fitzroy, the Italian joint in Carlton, or the family-run Vietnamese/Chinese fusion restaurant in Richmond.“

„The world coffee market stinks. Prices paid to coffee farmers are based on a host of irrelevant factors, from predictions of frost on large Brazilian, to NY commodity speculators who’ve never been to a coffee village, to a market glutting flood of cheap Vietnamese coffee promoted by the World Bank. It’s a nightmare. As a result, coffee prices are the lowest in recorded history, and growers are receiving far less than it costs to produce their crop.“

„Major soluble coffee manufacturers in Brazil have been investing in new technology to set up ultra modern factories. The low cost of production of the Brazilian Robusta, the main ingredient for soluble coffee and its superior quality has made the Brazilian Robusta a very competitive alternative to the Vietnamese robusta especially in the American market. The devaluation has also helped here in that it made Brazilian soluble coffee much more competitive.“
