Utz Kapeh Information (#)
„This is a 'decency' standard for coffee production that ensures good, efficient, responsible farm management and full traceability. Purchasing from these certified producers allows coffee brands to take direct responsibility for the source of its coffee. This will lead to better terms of trade for coffee producers, makes the coffee traceable for coffee brands, and creates long term relationships in the coffee chain. Utz Kapeh means "good coffee" in a Guatemalan Maya language.“

„They've already sold 750kilos - I think that's great! And Utz Kapeh's work in Holland is interesting, too - they're questioning prices being charged for fair trade coffee.“

„All food items being brought into the US will have to be traceable to the farm to comply with bio-terrorism acts. For coffee, traceability just has to go back to the mill. The law will go into effect December 12, 2003. Most coffee producers around the world are not taking any steps to comply with these rules. All food manufacturers have to be registered. Farms and millers are exempt. Roasters and packagers must register. It can only be done on internet and after final rules are written and accepted (on or around October 15, 2003). SCAA is pushing for Letters of Agreements with producing countries to participate in Cup of Excellence program. SCAA and NCA are lobbying US to join the ICO. If the US doesn’t join, the ICO will probably collapse. Frank feels HCA’s participation in the International Relations Committee is worthwhile. He can attend the next meeting in January and at the SCAA Convention if the HCA so desires. The convention center in Atlanta for the SCAA is 3 miles away from the main hotels.“
