„Following the successful Lutheran World Relief (LWR) Coffee Project in 2000-2003--which resulted in the purchase of 45 tons of Fair Trade Certified coffee--LWR and Equal Exchange have joined Lutheran Woman Today magazine in challenging Lutherans to a 90-ton coffee brewing goal. The “Pour Justice to the Brim” campaign began October 2003. By January 2004, Lutherans had purchased 41 tons of FTC coffee--40% of the goal in just four months!“

„Participants saw first hand the roots of the LWR Coffee Project, a program that educates Lutherans about the social justice issues around the coffee industry and encourages people to purchase coffee that has been fairly traded. Participants took part in discussions with local economists, historians, Lutheran church leaders, and LWR staff and partners. They also participated in the harvest and stay in the homes of coffee farmers for an up-close experience.“

„LWR and Lutherans have made a commitment to 100% fair trade and to our partnership with Equal Exchange -- a 100% coffee company that upholds the highest standards of fair trade. Equal Exchange, the pioneer and U.S. market leader in fair trade coffee since 1986, partners with LWR to offer Fair Trade Certified coffee, tea, and hot cocoa. Recently, Equal Exchange launched a nationally distributed organic, Fair Trade Certified cocoa baking powder.“

„According to Lutheran World Relief (LWR), some 20 million coffee farmers in Africa, Asia and Latin America often struggle to make a simple living and lack adequate health care and education for their children. One way Lutherans are supporting coffee farmers is by purchasing coffee directly from farmers in a process called "fair trade."“

„Be sure to mention the LWR Coffee Project. Ask your local supermarket or coffee shop to carry these products, order them yourself, or get your congregation involved. If your congregation is already involved, support their efforts with your purchases. Spread the word about the project.“
