„Peace Coffee is one of the few companies that specializes exclusively in selling coffee that meets Fair Trade criteria. Its growing number of blends all adhere to Fair Trade rules, as reviewed by TransFair USA (www.transfair.org), an international certification agency. To label itself as a Fair Trade roaster, a business must deal with farming cooperatives directly, foster long-term trading relations based on mutual respect, provide advanced credit during the harvest to keep farmers out of debt to coyotes, and purchase only from farms that practice chemical-free, sustainable agriculture. Roasters using the TransFair USA label pay TransFair a 10-cent-per-pound licensing fee for promotion and administration costs; farmers pay nothing to be part of the Fair Trade system.“http://www.cooperativecoffees.com/about/news/ fortune.html - Cached
The Coffee Review - the world's leading coffee buying guide

„To simplify, the fair-trade movement determines a formula for a "fair" price for coffee paid to farmers, a price that will make no one rich but which will help subsistence farmers avoid absolute misery. The certifying agency, in this case TransFair USA, also confirms that the farmers who receive this fair price are small holders organized in democratically run cooperatives who follow positive environmental practices. The modest premium paid the farmers according to the fair-trade formula is passed on through the system to coffee lovers, who presumably will happily pay a couple of pennies more per cup, given how much those pennies help struggling farmers. The controversy mainly focuses on whether paying people for coffee on the basis of formula and democratic organization rather than on the basis of quality is wise in the long run. Some of us, me included, have dedicated ourselves to creating a culture around coffee analogous to the culture around wine, with the long-term goal of assuring that people who produce great coffee are paid great coffee prices, rather than the insulting pittance they receive now.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=8 - Cached

„Fair Trade does not necessarily mean that the extra money trickles down to the people who harvest the coffee. TransFair USA is an independent 3rd party certification that ensures that: Coffee importers agree to purchase from the small farmers included in the International Fair Trade Coffee Register. Farmers are guaranteed a minimum "fair trade price" of $1.26/pound FOB for their coffee. If world price rises above this floor price, farmers will be paid a small ($0.05/pound) premium above market price. Coffee importers provide a certain amount of credit to farmers against future sales, helping farmers stay out of debt to local coffee "coyotes" or middlemen. Importers and roasters agree to develop direct, long-term trade relationships with producer groups, thereby cutting out middlemen and bringing greater commercial stability to an extremely unstable market.“http://www.coffeeguide.com/coffeepolitics.html - Cached

„Roasters were getting used to career low coffee prices, and at the same time were becoming aware of the need for supporting farm produce prices for coffee. Roasters, sensitized, by articles in the trade periodicals, and newsletters, and programs sponsored by SCAA began thinking about value added items from origin such as those certified by sustainable coffee organizations as Rainforest Alliance, and Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC), Transfair USA, and the various Organic certifying organizations. A few even initiated direct partnering relationships with producer farms. But mostly we enjoyed the lowest prices for best quality coffee in decades, and few if any of the roaster trade thought that was a bad thing.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0203/special.htm - Cached

„But, the show went on, and I went about the floor. I stopped by the Fair Trade pavilion once again, and this time I met Kenya Lewis, the PR Manager for TransFair USA (website ) and we briefly discussed Fair Trade coffee and its impact on farmers' lives. Now, I'm one who believes the Fair Trade Certification process is far from perfect, but it's the best the industry has, and I'm sure the folks involved in it want it to be as good as possible, because the real mission is simple - give farmers a living wage for the product we enjoy so much. Kenya is a wonderful person, and I could tell from our brief conversation she's a concerned activist for this cause.“http://www.coffeegeek.com/opinions/showreports/ 05-08-2002 - Cached

Definatley the legal system in the USA means that anything certified by Transfair or similar organisations has to be audited to be verified as being 'organic', 'shade grown' and 'fairtraded'. Perhaps though (and if you look back through some posts you will see I have ranted about this issue months ago) the very best coffees from origins such as Indonesia are never going to make certification. The process is very expensive and well beyond the means of most small holders and coops that I see.“http://www.coffeeforums.com/ viewtopic.php?p=6993 - Cached
