„"Starbucks launch of Fair Trade coffee is an historic event that will have a tremendous impact on disadvantaged coffee farmers and their families," says Paul Rice, Executive Director of TransFair USA. "At a time when family farmers are facing severe economic hardship due to the current slump in world coffee prices, Starbucks high-profile support for Fair Trade sends a powerful and visionary message to the rest of the coffee industry-that the plight of small coffee growers cannot be ignored. With every cup of Starbucks Fair Trade coffee, consumers are supporting and empowering farmers and their families." "We are very excited to further extend Starbucks Fair Trade coffee to colleges and universities," said Dave Olsen, Starbucks senior vice president, Corporate Social Responsibility. "Our participation with organizations such as TransFair USA, Conservation International and CARE demonstrate our commitment to coffee producers and their families, communities and the natural environment." In the breakthrough alliance announced in April 2000, Starbucks committed to sourcing, roasting and selling Fair Trade certified coffee to meet consumer demand.“

„Most Fair Trade Certified coffee, tea and chocolate in the US is certified organic and shade grown. This means that the products you buy maintain biodiversity, provide shelter for migratory birds and help reduce global warming.“

„Unfortunately, the planting of full sun varieties usually requires the removal of shade trees, which has dramatically reduced habitat for birds and other wildlife. According to researchers from the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Program, studies in Colombia and Mexico found 94-97% fewer bird species in sun grown coffee than in shade grown coffee. With today's introduction of Cafe Verde™ and Cafe Verde™ Decaf, the National Wildlife Federation and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters are joining forces to call attention to both environmental issues and the economic crisis that millions of small-scale coffee farmers are facing. Coffee prices are at historically low levels, below most farmers' costs of production.“

„In 1991, Equal Exchange became the first U.S. company to officially adopt Fair Trade Labelling Organization International (FLO) standards as guiding principles. With the establishment of TransFair USA, an independent certifier belonging to FLO, we proudly sell more "Fair Trade Certified"® coffee than any other company in North America. This certification is an independent verification of our standards. As a fair trade organization, Equal Exchange is committed to these principles not just in our products but at the core of our mission and the way we do business.“
