Transfair USA | Press Releases (#)
„"Fair Trade is needed because with little or no income, farmers can be forced to sell their next crop in advance to local middlemen, who often pay far below the harvest's value," added Rice. "Currently, world coffee prices are in a prolonged slump." Starbucks Fair Trade certified coffee will be sold in 16-ounce FlavorLock™ bags for $11.45 in retail stores in the United States and on Starbucks.com. The coffee, part of the Lively Impressions family, is a balanced light-to-medium blend of Latin American coffees with complementary acidity and body. It is the second offering of Starbucks "Commitment to Origins" coffees, which includes shade grown, organic and/or Fair Trade selections.“

„According to TransFair USA, the Fair Trade certification improves farmers' economic stability by encouraging buyers to extend financial credit to farmer cooperatives and to develop long-term relationships. Starbucks Fair Trade Certified coffee is a dynamic blend of washed Arabica coffees with a flavor profile similar to Latin American coffees — a light to medium coffee with a soft acidity. "We are very excited about Hyatt's support of Commitment to Origins coffees," said John Culver, vice president and general manager of Foodservice for Starbucks. "By offering Starbucks Shade Grown Mexico and Fair Trade Certified coffees we are building upon our commitment to offer high quality products to Hyatt's guests.""The addition of Starbucks Commitment to Origins coffees is an invitation for Hyatt guests to help support the sustainability of coffee farming families around the globe, while enjoying the highest quality coffees," said Sue Mecklenburg, vice president of Business Practices for Starbucks.“

„Receive a fair price for their harvest - A minimum of $1.26 per pound ($1.41 for Organic Certified) Have access to credit and direct access to American markets, cutting out exploitative middlemen Benefit from cooperative programs supporting social and commercial development Currently, many coffee farmers receive as little as 20 cents per pound of coffee, well below their cost of production. The substantial difference between 20 cents and the Fair Trade price of $1.26 per pound often represents the road out of desperate poverty. It enables farmers to keep children in school, feed their families, improve healthcare and housing and invest in improving the quality of their coffee.“

„Buying Fair Trade coffee for espresso beverages is another step we can take to strengthen relationships with the farmers who grow our coffee.""Working with Fair Trade cooperatives in Central and South America will give us the opportunity to do what we do best - forge great relationships and deliver great coffee to our customers," said Rob Stephen, Dunkin' Donuts Coffee Product Development Manager. Stephen, who is a board member of the Specialty Coffee Association of America, added, "This is important work and we look forward to doing it." "This landmark announcement is a major step forward for efforts to help coffee farmers, and to protect quality coffee supplies for the years to come," says Paul Rice, CEO and President TransFair USA. "It's critical that key industry retailers embrace the Fair Trade model and acknowledge the important role they can play to help solve the current crisis of low prices driving coffee farmers out of business. Dunkin' Donuts is setting an excellent industry example with this move." Oxfam America President Raymond C.“

„TransFair USA is an independent 3rd party certification that ensures that: Coffee importers agree to purchase from the small farmers included in the International Fair Trade Coffee Register. Farmers are guaranteed a minimum "fair trade price" of $1.26/pound FOB for their coffee. If world price rises above this floor price, farmers will be paid a small ($0.05/pound) premium above market price. Coffee importers provide a certain amount of credit to farmers against future sales, helping farmers stay out of debt to local coffee "coyotes" or middlemen. Importers and roasters agree to develop direct, long-term trade relationships with producer groups, thereby cutting out middlemen and bringing greater commercial stability to an extremely unstable market.“
