„Fair Trade percolating on campuses nation-wide From UCLA to Yale, students have been a driving force in raising awareness about Fair Trade. Fair Trade coffee campaigns on over 200 college campuses nationwide, including Harvard, Northwestern, Cornell, Loyola University, Boston University, University of Texas, Brown University, Georgetown, Oklahoma State, Villanova University, the University of Georgia, UCLA and UC Berkeley, have helped to dramatically increase both awareness and sales. To support this growing demand, students have established the United Students for Fair Trade (USFT), a national student-led umbrella organization working to promote awareness and increase demand for Fair Trade on university campuses. Campus victories The Harvard USFT members have been working hard to bring Fair Trade Certified bananas to their campus.“

Other related events involved retail tours hosted by TransFair and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, Equal Exchange's Producer Reception, and an info session led by the United Students for Fair Trade. TransFair's Fair Trade booth was consistently buzzing with activity as it provided an ideal space for the specialty coffee community to network.“

„Paul Rice, TransFair's Director, spent over ten years working with coffee cooperatives in Latin America and realized that building a Fair Trade market was more sustainable than other development projects. TransFair reasoned that it could appeal to "specialty" coffee consumers: buyers who pay top dollar for top-quality Arabica beans. Arabica coffee retails for about $10 a pound and comprises 15 to 25 percent of the total coffee market. TransFair's research showed that people who pay $10 a pound for coffee would not mind adding a dollar more to guarantee a fair trade price to small coffee farmers.“
