„The Fair Trade movement took root in Europe in the 1990's as a way of bolstering coffee farmers as prices were collapsing. When coffee bean prices hit a 30-year low in 2001, farmers could expect a price of 47 cents per pound for their product; in 1997, the price was $3.18. Coffee beans are the world's second-largest traded commodity (second only to oil), with millions of livelihoods dependent on its sale.“

„According to TransFair USA, the Fair Trade certification improves farmers' economic stability by encouraging buyers to extend financial credit to farmer cooperatives and to develop long-term relationships. Starbucks Fair Trade Certified coffee is a dynamic blend of washed Arabica coffees with a flavor profile similar to Latin American coffees — a light to medium coffee with a soft acidity. "We are very excited about Hyatt's support of Commitment to Origins coffees," said John Culver, vice president and general manager of Foodservice for Starbucks.   „In Europe, where Fair Trade Certified bananas have gained market share as high as 24 percent and are growing at a rate of over 50 percent per year, grocery retailers have found Fair Trade Certified bananas to be an answer to the "banana price wars" instigated by mass market retailers. Fair Trade certification is a powerful marketing tool that adds value to commodities, allowing retailers to choose the higher ground, both morally and financially.“

Fair Trade helps family farmers in developing countries to gain direct access to international markets, as well as to develop the business capacity necessary to compete in the global marketplace. By learning how to market their own harvests, Fair Trade farmers are able to bootstrap their own businesses and receive a fair price for their products. This leads to higher family living standards, thriving communities and more sustainable farming practices. Fair Trade empowers farming families to take care of themselves - without developing dependency on foreign aid.“

TransFair USA is an independent 3rd party certification that ensures that: Coffee importers agree to purchase from the small farmers included in the International Fair Trade Coffee Register. Farmers are guaranteed a minimum "fair trade price" of $1.26/pound FOB for their coffee. If world price rises above this floor price, farmers will be paid a small ($0.05/pound) premium above market price. Coffee importers provide a certain amount of credit to farmers against future sales, helping farmers stay out of debt to local coffee "coyotes" or middlemen. Importers and roasters agree to develop direct, long-term trade relationships with producer groups, thereby cutting out middlemen and bringing greater commercial stability to an extremely unstable market.“
