Amazon.com: Books: Pavilions of Plenty: Exhibiting American Culture Abroad in the 1950s (#)

„Focusing on international trade fairs and world's fairs of the Cold War years, Haddow recounts how exhibits with slogans such as "Industry in the Service of Mankind" and "People's Capitalism" were meant to seduce European audiences to the American way of life. Under the direction of the Eisenhower administration, and with the financial assistance of the advertising and business communities, American consumer culture was sent abroad as a "silent ambassador for democratic ideals." Haddow's background as an art historian is apparent and welcome in the attention he pays to the artists and architects involved in the actual design and production of the exhibits. Especially strong is the lengthy section on the 1958 Brussels World's Fair where the rigid ideological demands of the U.S. department of state (the overseeing governmental agency) often clashed with the modernist aesthetic of the architect Edward Durell Stone, whose free-flowing circular American pavilion owed a debt to Frank Lloyd Wright, and to the educational theories of Victor D'Amico, a director at the Museum of Modern Art.“

The World Bank - Markets & Agribusiness (#)

„As its abilities developed, its mandate expanded to include all food products and its capacities now include expanded technical and research services. By 1998 it was conducting 20 trade missions, participating in 51 trade fairs, and operating in 24 markets. Although initially designed to work with individual SMEs, the organization has shifted to include associations and producer groups and is encouraging small producers to first participate in domestic trade as a way of building capacity.Unfortunately, cost recovery has been more symbolic than meaningful -- at approximately three percent of total operating costs -- and it continues to be dependent on external funding although it is seeking to expand its funding through a government tax on exports. Nevertheless, it has leveraged benefits through participation in some creative promotions such as that with PROCAR, the Argentine meat marketing association, which joined forces with PROMEX in order to jointly promote overseas trade.“

Amazon.com: Books: World's Fairs (#)

„While other books on individual fairs exist, World's Fairs by historian and collector Erik Mattie, is the first illustrated volume to present an illustrated volume to present an international history of the most notable world exhibitions. Over time, the original intention of the fairs to encourage world peace through world trade has changed, as has the general nature of the fairs themselves. World peace and free trade have becomes separate ideals, and the preeminent attraction of fairs today is their entertainment value. For example, displays of national identity are more popular now (ie., picturesque historical villages) than displays of a country's industrial products.“

World Bank Research - Working Papers (#)

„Pribumi and smaller firms relied heavily on collective marketing support provided with a "light touch" -- for example, support for participation in trade fairs. The Ministry of Trade's international network of offices geared to providing information and facilitating transactions was of little use to the firms surveyed. Collective technology support also appeared to be somewhat more important for smaller, pribumi firms, although its impact was modest.“

BBC Learning English | Ten Days | Day 3 - Meet the People (#)

„Another tip; make your appointments in advance, people are incredibly busy at these trade fairs and if you go there thinking that you'll meet people in the corridors, or you'll meet people by chance, or you'll have a meeting or appointment on the wing, it won't happen, it simply won't happen. You really need to prepare in advance and organise fixed meetings and organise what that meeting is going to be about, so there's a clear focus.“

Tea & Coffee 09/00 - International Cafe Focus (#)

„Young and vivacious, she is one of the many Nanninis connected to the company. Her responsibilities are in sales and organizing the company’s presence at trade fairs. She makes it clear that even though Bei & Nannini was founded in 1923-and certainly hasn’t changed much since then-it is indeed thriving, expanding, exporting and introducing new products. The company has just launched a pod line, for example.“

At Strasbourg, Marie Louis, another supporter of the cause, opened her home to volunteers.“
