„Secondly, two of the solutions regularly proposed to the suffering incurred by plunging coffee prices are revealingly represented in Pursuing Coffee Quality at the Supermarket. The first is the fair-trade solution, a conscience-based approach that involves collecting a small toll from participating growers and roasters to use in publicizing the impact of the price crisis and persuading concerned coffee drinkers to pay modestly higher prices for coffees that are certified fair-trade, meaning coffees purchased at a "fair" price from qualifying cooperatives of small-holding growers. The second we might call the specialty beverage or snob solution, which involves persuading consumers who care about pleasure and prestige to pay more for coffees that taste better in the cup, or at least come with a reputation for tasting better in the cup. By rewarding quality with higher prices, and by generally raising the prestige of coffee as a beverage, the snob solution rewards the most committed coffee growers with higher prices and recognition over the long term.“http://www.virtualcoffee.com/articles/summer03/ article2.html - Cached

„The certifying agency, in this case TransFair USA, also confirms that the farmers who receive this fair price are small holders organized in democratically run cooperatives who follow positive environmental practices. The modest premium paid the farmers according to the fair-trade formula is passed on through the system to coffee lovers, who presumably will happily pay a couple of pennies more per cup, given how much those pennies help struggling farmers. The controversy mainly focuses on whether paying people for coffee on the basis of formula and democratic organization rather than on the basis of quality is wise in the long run. Some of us, me included, have dedicated ourselves to creating a culture around coffee analogous to the culture around wine, with the long-term goal of assuring that people who produce great coffee are paid great coffee prices, rather than the insulting pittance they receive now. In other words, change our cultural attitudes about coffee so that North Americans buy coffee like they buy wine, whereupon retailers can charge more for a genuinely fine coffee, importers can pay more for a genuinely fine coffee, and growers who produce fine coffee not only will receive more money for their efforts, but also will receive recognition as the dedicated artisans they are, equivalent to the world's fine winemakers.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=8 - Cached

„Beth Ann Caspersen, Quality Control Officer for Equal Exchange, a distinguished green coffee dealer and roasting company, points out that, in fact, there are three additional Fair-Trade origins available in North America: East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and Tanzania. Beth Ann goes on to write that: "non-Latin American Fair Trade coffees have been sold on the U.S. market for much longer than two years. We at Equal Exchange have been offering Fair Trade Tanzanian since 1996 and Fair Trade Sumatran since 1997. I believe others have also been importing some of these Fair Trade non-LA origins before 2002."She concludes with a plug for Fair Trade: "I would also like to point out to your readers the great success Fair Trade producers had at the recent Nicaraguan Cup of Excellence competition where Fair Trade cooperatives took 5 of the top 10 spots, including the best organic, Fair Trade coffee in the competition."“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=95 - Cached
Coffee Guide - Coffee Politics
(#)
„Fair trade coffee is coffee that is traded by bypassing the coffee trader and therefore giving the producer (and buyer) higher profits. Fair Trade does not necessarily mean that the extra money trickles down to the people who harvest the coffee. TransFair USA is an independent 3rd party certification that ensures that: Coffee importers agree to purchase from the small farmers included in the International Fair Trade Coffee Register. Farmers are guaranteed a minimum "fair trade price" of $1.26/pound FOB for their coffee. If world price rises above this floor price, farmers will be paid a small ($0.05/pound) premium above market price. Coffee importers provide a certain amount of credit to farmers against future sales, helping farmers stay out of debt to local coffee "coyotes" or middlemen. Importers and roasters agree to develop direct, long-term trade relationships with producer groups, thereby cutting out middlemen and bringing greater commercial stability to an extremely unstable market.“http://www.coffeeguide.com/coffeepolitics.html - Cached

Top-tier chefs Dan Barber of Blue Hill Restaurant, New York; Mark Weber of Watermark, Milwaukee; Greg Higgins of Higgins, Portland; and Traci DesJardins of Jardiniere and Acme Chophouse, San Francisco all serve Fair Trade Certified food in their restaurants. Fair Trade pioneers like Equal Exchange continue to expand their businesses and launch new Fair Trade products. „Some are happy to see P&G step up to the coffee crisis plate; others feel that the proclamation is little and late, and possibly disingenuous with P&G resembling a child who traces the Mona Lisa and presents it as his or her own. Mass.-based Equal Exchange, the current leader in fair-trade-certified coffee importing, has couched its critique of P&G in the form of a challenge: If in 2004 P&G can at least match the small Massachusetts cooperative pound for pound in fair-trade-coffee sales, Equal Exchange will donate $25,000 to one of its farmer cooperative trading partners in Latin America. Equal Exchange currently imports almost three million pounds of fair-trade-certified coffee in a year. P&G imports close to five hundred million pounds of coffee each year, so its projection of two-to-three million pounds of fair-trade-coffee equals less than one percent of its entire import volumea negligible quantity and a large reason for Equal Exchanges challenge.“http://www.freshcup.com/jan04_unfiltered.htm - Cached

Global Exchange : Background

„The chief concern of the Fair Trade movement has been to ensure that the vast majority of the world's coffee farmers (who are small holders) get a fair price for their harvests in order to achieve a decent living wage. Fair Trade guarantees to poor farmers organized in cooperatives around the world: a living wage (minimum price of $1.26/pound regardless of the volatile market); much needed credit at fair prices; and long term relationships. These fair payments are invested in health care, education, environmental stewardship, and economic independence. Fair Trade Certified coffee is the first product being introduced in the United States with an independently monitored system to ensure that it was produced under fair labor conditions; now we need a movement to demand it!!“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ background.html - Cached

„Rimini is easily accessible by car and train and is within 5 to 6 hours driving from most major cities in Italy and the surrounding mainland countries. The Fair itself is adjacent to a major Autostrada and the new station allows train travellers direct access to the Rimini Trade Fair site. For those travelling from further away, the nearest airport is Forli which has daily flights by RyanAir from the UK and Germany. If you book early enough the airfares will be VERY favourable. Connections between Forli and Rimini are reasonable but may involve a short wait. A little further away, but still within easy access, is Bologna airport which several airlines fly to, including EasyJet, which also has very favourable prices, if booked early enough. There are good train and bus connections from Bologna airport to Rimini.“http://www.scae.com/rimini/ - Cached

„Unlike other books that discuss America's foreign trade policies, Bovard's work looks critically at these policies and how they directly and adversely affect U.S. consumers. Stating that "fair trade consists largely of the U.S. government devising new ways to protect American consumers against the scourge of low prices," Bovard gives specific examples that illustrate his claim that U.S. consumers are forced to pay higher prices for many goods because of our protectionist foreign trade policy. Writing from the viewpoint of one who has investigated and reported on the inconsistencies and hypocrisies in government practices, he makes his position quite clear--the government decides what consumers may buy by levying stiff tariffs on and restricting imports of many foreign goods. A disturbing work on a timely topic.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/ 0312083440?v=glance - Cached
