„Coffee professionals often pit these two solutions to the coffee price crisis against one another, the coffee snob side claiming that fair-trade coffees are a sort of socialist solution that eliminates market incentives for quality, while some fair-trade adherents implicitly knock the coffee snobs as obsessives who care more about aroma and mouthfeel than they do about human beings. What I find interesting about the results of the Pursuing Coffee Quality at the Supermarket cupping is how they suggest that these two solutions are not as contradictory as they seem at first. In terms of quality, the fair-trade Guatemala from Bucks County turns out to be every bit as distinguished in the cup as the three Kenyas. On the other hand, all of the finest Kenyas are produced by cooperatives of small holding growers working through an auction system, so it can be argued that an extra dollar spent for a good Kenya, regardless of the reason for that expenditure, is every bit as well-spent in social terms as a dollar spent on a fair-traded coffee.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=74 - Cached

Some trends from the West Coast take time to catch on back east and Fair Trade coffee has taken over three years to arrive in earnest. But as quality has improved and customers have become sensitive to the economic hardships facing the world's coffee farmers, Fair Trade coffee has finally blossomed in New York.“http://www.transfairusa.org/content/about/ n_030723.php - Cached

„It needs to be convenient and accessible. We need to be able to walk into a cafés and order a fair trade cup; to be able to grab a bag of fairly traded coffee beans off the supermarket shelf. The only way to have a choice is by making the product available to consumers, and the only way to do this is to make it clear to producers and retailers that we want the option to buy fair trade coffee. "When you buy coffee," says Harris, "you are voting on which systems you support."“http://www.cooperativecoffees.com/about/news/ spr99organicnews.html - Cached

„This spring has seen the launch of many new Fairtrade products, including speciality Fairtrade teas and coffees, and the first Fairtrade sugar. Most significant is the first own-brand Fairtrade product from a UK supermarket – a new milk chocolate bar from the Co-op, which sells for 39p. It is made of high quality cocoa from Ghanaian co-operative Kuapa Kokoo, which also goes into Oxfam’s African Cocoa, which now carries the Fairtrade Mark and is sold in some Sainsbury’s stores.“http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/fc-sum00a.htm - Cached

„In the U.S., where fair-trade items are just catching on, pricing anomalies already have arisen. Wild Oats Natural Marketplace, a 78-store national supermarket chain run by Wild Oats Markets Inc., of Boulder, Colo., introduced fair-trade organic bananas in January at 99 cents a pound -- the same price as regular organic bananas. "We've taken a margin hit, but we feel that bringing in the fair-trade bananas is the right thing to do for the farmers," says a spokeswoman. In late 2002, the chain introduced fair-trade bulk organic coffee at $9.99 a pound, the same price as regular bulk organic coffee.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 2064.html - Cached

„"Fair trade" means the farmers who grow the cocoa beans that go into chocolate will get paid more money. The Co-Op supermarket chain has promised to make all its own-brand chocolate completely fair trade. It's struck a deal with cocoa farmers in Ghana in West Africa Farmers in Africa harvest cocoa Campaigners for fair trade say big companies don't pay a fair price for the cocoa beans and keep too much money from the chocolate they sell. Because so many people grow cocoa around the world, the companies can look for ages until they find the lowest price possible.“http://news.bbc.co.uk/cbbcnews/hi/world/newsid_2514000/ 2514551.stm - Cached

„The world price is currently 60 cents (US) per pound, whereas the minimum price for Fair Trade coffee is 126 cents (US). In practice this means that Fair Trade coffees cannot be priced as low as a typical supermarket blend sold by a multinational. Some of the Fair Trade coffees are currently priced in the $5.00 per pound retail price range, which is fairly accessible. When coffee is sold by the cup, the difference in price between Fair Trade and conventional evaporates to a mere four or five cents per cup.“http://www.ineedcoffee.com/01/08/klatching/ print.asp - Cached

„Following the tremendous success of Fairtrade bananas, we are working with a number of supermarkets and fresh produce importers to extend the FAIRTRADE Mark to many more tropical and exotic fruits. In addition to pineapples and mangoes (trialled by the Co-op in early 2002), we are talking to producers of citrus fruits, grapes, passion fruit, papaya and coconuts who are keen to participate in Fairtrade. We expect this work to ‘bear fruit’ during 2003.“http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/fc-spr03.htm - Cached
