Tips on Coffee - The Devil's Cup: Coffee, the Driving Force in History (#)
„Needless to say, the whole thing becomes an international comedy of errors. Allen is an elegant prose stylist, providing countless insights about people and his beloved brew: ``Turkish coffee is like a clenched fist in a cup, tight, bitter, and black. The Yemen version, which comes glowing golden in a large glass tumbler, is a lighter, whimsical brew, deliciously sweet.'' In Vienna, Allen discovers how the invading Ottoman Turks brought coffee to Europe, transforming the whole continent. The author describes precaffeinated Europe as deadly dull, ``a lot like Nebraska on a slow weekendchurch or beer.'' Coffee was a harbinger for European political reform, especially in England and France.“

„It's important to understand exactly when making new pots of coffee is required, as countless numbers of your fellow employees rely on your coffee-making prowess to survive throughout the day. This is especially true on any given Monday. The first and most obvious time to infuse a batch of premium French Roast (see document: Appropriate Coffee Types for Office Consumption) is if you are the first to arrive at the office. The pot is invariably empty at this time.“

„Russo's prose, admittedly is better than Walley's, but the text is essentially a watered down version of Slavin's superior biography. The only interesting aspects of the book are collected newspaper clippings (most of which are illegible) and assorted photos, although they feature none of the bands from the latee 70s and 80s. By far the worst aspect of the book though is Russo's attempts at deciphering conceptual continuity, which run: '"Zomby Woof" is a corruption of "Zombie Wolf"' No! Really?“

„It is a measure of the excellence of Budden's achievement that this cornucopia of information is surveyed in very readable prose--readers get a picture of each work within its context. Budden's knowledge of 19th-century opera--both in Italy and in France--is wide-ranging, and he is able to place Verdi and his works in comparison with those of Donizetti, Pacini, Mercadante, and Meyerbeer. He discusses how the great operatic genius emerged from the background of early-19th-century opera and how Verdi's own early, uneven works blossomed into the glory of his later ones. Budden, thankfully, is not a hagiographer, and he recognizes Verdi's faults as well as his strengths, but few--if any--writers have managed to demonstrate how Verdi both blended in with his musical surroundings and stood out from them.“

„I've had a few late nights during this time, to be sure, more from immersion in study than saturation in caffeine: countless hours spent reading up on technique and the trials of other enthusiasts, which mark only the beginning of what proves to be an unending obsession. A serviceable decaf is essential during the relentless pursuit of excellence.“
