„In fact, all three have this striking aggressiveness and it has led me to rethink my biases towards Colombians as wimpy middle of the road coffees. I am not saying you can go out there and get a wimpy cup of Juan Valdez 95% of it is like that. But Colombia changed their whole strategy lately: they reversed the trend toward pooling coffees and emphasized single origin and single estate, These are the results ...the flavorful coffees that were formerly lost in a sea of lower-grown dreck, now liberated to brew potent yet balanced coffee!“

„Blending for Branding: Another reason to blend is to create a proprietary or signature blend that leads consumers to equate a particular coffee profile with a particular brand image. Consumers don't often call Starbucks by the origin names used in the coffee but simply as "a cup of Starbucks." It is as if the dark carbony roast tastes were somehow exclusive to that brand. So blends inherently refer to the place where the coffee was bought, and create allegiance to the retail source rather than creating awareness of the true flavor-origins: the farm, the region, the cultivar, the soil, the altitude, the hard work of the farmer, etc.“

„I see the better coffees going out to the little guys who are happy with smaller lots and both decent and crappy coffee tagged for delivery to the huge companies. (Oh, why not name names: Sara Lee buying the moderately good Brazil Oberon, but a full container of Vietnam Robusta with about 50% below-grade, black beans being shipped out to Superior Coffee -ironic, eh?)“

„We sent out some mistaken Malabar Gold Espresso Blend on several dates, and we want to replace any coffee we sent that was wrong! We have sent email to all people who bought Malabar Gold early this year, so everyone who bought any in 2001 who is affected has been contacted. But there are a few people who purchased it around 11/10 -11/20/00 that we dont have email records for so if you have or remember getting some odd-looking Malabar Gold in late 00, please look at this web page: www.sweetmarias.com/malabar.gold.html “

„The bottom line is that the Chianti Classico 2000 project is looking to the future. To compete they must improve the quality of their product ; they must integrate the most up-to-date information available throughout its zone; and it must produce more typified and distinct products than ever before which nobody else can duplicate. This kind of research can easily be translated into the coffee industry in the most famous and quality oriented regions, and it is a necessity if the industry is going to meet the demands of the future.“

„Because the origin is the brand, its the name these small farmers depend upon to allow their coffee to reach a market like the US. In the case of canned coffee, their brand name is key and they can switch the blend at any time to ensure the absolute lowest cost of production possible. And that can never work in favor of the small farmer.“
