Tiny Joy, a home coffee roasting newsletter from Sweet Maria's Coffee (#)
„The first ever auctions for Panama coffees was held in May and Sweet Marias purchased two lots of the 8 winning coffees, including the #1 ranked coffee from Finca Lerida. While some of the farms that were awarded the top 8 spots and inclusion in the auction might be familiar, these specific coffee lots represented the best coffee from the best farms. They were picked and processed beyond the highest standards to compete against the many Panamanian farms that entered the competition. Sweet Marias paid the record price for the winning lot, the highest in the auction.“

„Many people have discussed this as an insurance policy for farmers, and since the actual premiums for cup quality will remain, as they do now, we wouldnt be doing harm to the great cup we love while insuring a decent existence for those who make it all possible. We also are Fair Trade certified by Transfair, we buy Auction Lot coffees and market-independent coffees (the vast majority of our offerings fall into this category), and we donate on a per Lb. basis back to organizations like Coffee Kids, Doctors Without Borders, and the International Red Cross.“

„Degradation of coffee flavor is inevitable, and pre-roasted coffee, whether it is packaged in a valve-bag or not, has inevitably lost flavor. So it makes sense that the simplest way to combat all the forces that ruin coffee quality over time is to reduce the time between roasting and consumption.“

„Blending for Branding: Another reason to blend is to create a proprietary or signature blend that leads consumers to equate a particular coffee profile with a particular brand image. Consumers don't often call Starbucks by the origin names used in the coffee but simply as "a cup of Starbucks." It is as if the dark carbony roast tastes were somehow exclusive to that brand. So blends inherently refer to the place where the coffee was bought, and create allegiance to the retail source rather than creating awareness of the true flavor-origins: the farm, the region, the cultivar, the soil, the altitude, the hard work of the farmer, etc.“

„Because the origin is the brand, its the name these small farmers depend upon to allow their coffee to reach a market like the US. In the case of canned coffee, their brand name is key and they can switch the blend at any time to ensure the absolute lowest cost of production possible. And that can never work in favor of the small farmer.“

„Specialty coffee is where the wine industry was 10-15 years ago., that is to say that, much like wine, coffee consumption is suddenly declining on a per capita basis. In fact, coffee is down roughly half from where it was in the early 60s. We see the same trend in the wine industry, people are drinking less but drinking better.“
