The SCAE Awards for Coffee Excellence

The SCAE Awards for Coffee Excellence ()

„Having leaned the through meaning of coffee quality by his European experience at a then leading coffee trader, he applied that to the development of the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association since its foundation in 1991 as the quality man, and during this period he has trained numerous cuppers in Brazil and thought many growers to do the evaluation of their production by themselves. As the national quality consultant for the ICO Gourmet Coffee Project, he has helped revolutionize the concept of fine coffees from Brazil, this having a major impact in the way Brazilian coffee growers handle their production, with a strong focus on quality in recent years.“

„Actually, speaking of Brazils and Cup of Excellence, I was in Diedrich's Coffee this morning where they were serving Brazil Cup of Excellence 2004 winning coffee which was pretty good for a coffee that doesn't even exist yet since the 2004 Brazil competition doesn't start until December. Oh those silly marketing people what will they think up next?“

„The Rimini gathering served as well as the first showcase of a number of innovative ideas on the competition front. In conjunction with the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA), the SCAE organised the Brazil Late Harvest Naturals Competition, which brought a number of new crop natural coffees to the attention of cuppers, by presenting them for evaluation under strict Cup of Excellence rules. The winning coffee, announced by the SCAE’s Steven Hurst and Alf Kramer, and José Francisco Pereira, BSCA president, was a pure Bourbon from Fazenda Cachoiera, a BSCA member in the Sul de Minas growing region.“

„We may say that in the short range its annual growth will reach 20% of the U.S. market in volume. The European and Japanese markets tend to follow, with an increasing consumption of specialty coffees. The Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association is promoting a series of actions with its own resources for many years and during this time it developed a partnership with international importers and representatives in the following markets: United States, United Kingdom, Germany; Switzerland; Italy; Spain and Japan. For sales to continue their ascending path in those markets we have to give support to our present clients and conquer new buyers through visits, lectures, samples, promotions and specialty coffee sampling.“

„A few factors are working in Brazil’s favor. The worldwide increase in consumption of espresso has increased the demand for Brazilian coffee. The Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association has made great strides in promoting the concept of sustainable coffee farming - “sustainable” defined as balancing economic feasibility with social and environmental concerns. And pulped natural technology continues to improve quality while reducing harvest costs.“
