The Javagirl Goes A-Cupping

The Javagirl Goes A-Cupping ()

„"Since it's aged, it almost has a wine-y characteristic," Jay tells us. "Aged decafs really hold up." The Arabian Mocha Sanani, most expensive coffee at Peet's at $15.45 a pound, comes from a small plantation and is a rarer coffee. "It almost tastes like blueberries!" Jay enthuses. The price point prompts me to ask Jay about a couple of other "rich" coffees with which I'm familiar.“

„Mocha-Java is the world's oldest recorded coffee blend. There is a simple reason for this: Mocha (from the rugged, fertile southern tip of the Arabian peninsula, now part of the Republic of Yemen) was the world's first commercial coffee, and Java (from the then-Dutch colony in what is now Indonesia) was more or less the second.“

„It is the bean that literally sold the world on coffee. The true Arabian Mocha, from North Yemen, is still grown as it probably was over a thousand years ago, on irrigated terraces clinging to the sides of semiarid mountains; water is directed through little rock-lined channels to the roots of the plants, which are shaded from the desert sun by rows of poplars. The beans are also processed as they have been for centuries; even the best grades (Mocha Extra) are natural coffees, dried with the fruit still attached to the beans. The dried husk is later removed by millstone or other primitive methods, which accounts for the rough, irregular look of the beans.“
