The Coffees of Jamaica

The Coffees of Jamaica ()

„This effort to improve quality, however, was not very successful: until 1943 it was unacceptable to the Canadian market, which at the time was the largest buyer of Jamaican coffee. In 1944 the Government established a Central Coffee Clearing House where all coffee for export had to be delivered to the Clearing House where it was cleaned and graded. Improvement in the quality of JamaicaÕs coffee export was underway. In June 1950 the Coffee Industry Board was established to officially raise and maintain the quality of coffee exported.“

„Some years ago it was not entirely clear whether any high-quality coffee from the Blue Mountain district of Jamaica was entitled to be marketed as Jamaican Blue Mountain, or whether the name properly applies only to coffees grown on a single plantation, the Wallensford Estate. Today, responsible roasters designate estate-produced coffees grown at over 3,000 feet in the Blue Mountain district of Jamaica as authentic Blue Mountain. Most will be either Wallensford (best) or Silver Hill Estate Mountain.“

„After Jamaica achieved its independence from Britain, the new Jamaican government continued that coffee policy, requiring that all Blue Mountain be wet-processed at government sanctioned mills and dried, dry-milled, cleaned, and graded at centralized facilities.“

„The prices offered to specialty coffees are not affected by the price fluctuations, if the coffees are well established in this niche segment. The classic examples are'Jamaican Blue Mountain' from Jamaica and'Kona' coffee from Hawaii. Of late many countries like Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil have made significant gains in the specialty coffee market by projecting distinct quality coffee from specific growing regions.“

„Jamaican coffee is one of the most expensive coffees in the world and therefore can be disappointing.  The best estates are Wallenford, Mavis Bank, and Old Tavern.  Be wary of Blue Mountain coffees that do not list the estate name, do not say 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain, or sell for less than $50 per pound.  Since the coffee is so expensive it is best to try to find it green and roast it yourself since it frequently goes stale on the shelves.“
