The Coffees of Ecuador: Specialty, Organic, Fair-Trade (#)
„Much of the price premium is reinvested in education and equipment improvements. In this way they can further improve consistency and cup-quality, and the Co-op can break the low-price cycle that has kept Ecuador from being recognized in the Specialty Coffee market. The cup has moderate acidity, fairly light body, and a fairly short aftertaste. But the dry fragrance of the cup is very sweet, caramelly and with spice hints.“

„to make sure that our cup of coffee .is fair-trade just simply fits in with who we say we try to be." Wicca Davidson, a real estate agent who chairs the kitchen service committee at her synagogue, Adat Shalom in Bethesda, said she decided to use fair-trade coffee at all the synagogue's social gatherings a year ago because "I wanted .something that was more responsible in terms of the people growing the coffee." The congregation "was delighted," the Chevy Chase resident added. Fair-trade coffee like Equal Exchange's, which costs from $5 to $6.80 a pound, is more expensive than the cheapest roasts that churches often buy at discount supermarkets but about the same in price as gourmet brands.“

„Headquartered in Americus, Georgia, the co-op is part of what has become known as the “fair-trade movement.” Fair trade is based on seven principles, such as paying fair wages to growers and working with cooperatives and other democratically run producer associations. For coffee, fair trade means paying a minimum of $1.26 per pound for regular coffee and $1.41 for organic, according to the requirements of Transfair USA, an independent fair-trade certifier that Cooperative Coffees work with.“

„As membership expands west, Harris expects the co-op to eventually open warehouses in other parts of the country. "Right now, our primary warehouse is in New Orleans, but I see us becoming more like other importers, where we store coffee from coast to coast."“
