„P&G’s Millstone will immediately offer Fair Trade Certified™ coffee to their wholesale accounts (universities, hotels, hospitals, etc.) and through its website , and will eventually begin retailing these products in supermarkets. Within the next few years, P&G has committed to increase the volume of Fair Trade Certified™ coffee purchased by Millstone to at least 2-3 million pounds. P&G will work with TransFair USA to monitor the sales of their fair trade coffee, to ensure that the percentages and sales are all that P&G and consumer activists hope.“

Procter & Gamble’s Millstone Coffee began offering Rainforest Alliance Signature Roast, Mountain Moonlight Fair Trade Certified and Cup of Excellence Signature Roast on a special web site. Another mainstream company, Citigroup, adopted sustainable coffee for its employees. At select Citigroup offices around the nation, coffee drinkers will now have the opportunity to linger during their breaks over cups of 100% Rainforest Alliance Certified coffee.“

„One simply is to acquire a specialty roaster (Proctor & Gamble owns Millstone Coffee); another is to distribute a specialty roasters coffee (Kraft apparently distributes Starbucks supermarket line of coffees); a third is to offer whole beans in bags under ones own label (whole-bean coffees offered by Procter & Gamble/Folgers and Nestlé/Nescafé). In almost all cases whole-bean coffees distributed by these companies far exceeded in quality analogous roast-and-ground products. The only exception was the MJB canned roast-and-ground Hawaiian blend, which handily out-rated two whole-bean Kona blends, one from Nestlé (Nescafé Kona Blend, 85) and one from the Safeway supermarket chain (Safeway Select Kona Blend, 84, not reviewed).I was curious about how well coffees from the Proctor & Gamble Millstone bulk line would match up against Starbucks bagged supermarket whole-bean coffees. Based on an extremely limited comparison, it was something of a standoff.“

„The big roasters, Kraft (www.kraftfoods.com/maxwellhouse), Sara Lee (www.saralee.com), and Procter & Gamble (www.folgers.com) roast most of their products for the common taste which is designed for other brewing methods than espresso even when the coffee is called “French.” There are few espresso blends produced, fewer still of the big brand products are ground for use in an espresso-maker. The bigger roasters in the U.S. are making comparable quality products to those made by commercial roasters in European markets including Italy. There is one large roaster only specializing exclusively in commercial production of dark roast coffees in the U.S., Rowland Coffee Roasters Inc, Miami Florida.“
