Tea & Coffee 11/03 - Is Espresso Good for Coffee? ()

„"[Espresso] Coffee drink drinkers are not coffee drinkers," explains Spindler, "they have no understanding of the unique qualities of the coffee itself - where it comes from, how the farmer tended the trees, even where the estate is located. Espresso-based drinks market the process of making the drink, and not the product. Retailers brand and market their store on their unique coffee drinks, such as lattes and ice-blended mochas. As the success of the Cup of Excellence has shown, coffee producing countries can market their finest coffee estates to the American consumer.” Spindler added, "We all need to tell a better story.“

„I would like to agree with the experience of Collective Ink. I do not target any specific brand of pod espresso makers. In general I do not agree with the idea of using Coffee pods. Coffee is not tea that can be packed or should be packed in tissue paper.“

„Six were habitual coffee drinkers and nine either abstained or drank coffee only occasionally. The volunteers were given either a full strength triple espresso, a decaffeinated version, an intravenous injection of caffeine or a placebo. Both types of espresso stimulated a significant jump in blood pressure among those who were not regular coffee drinkers. Advice Dr Corti said the lack of blood pressure elevation in coffee drinkers suggested regular consumption may help to reduce its potential for damaging health - at least among people who were not vulnerable to high blood pressure.“

„Second, there is a particularly wide spectrum of consuming habits among espresso drinkers, ranging from those who take a short shot without sugar, to others who add sugar to a straight shot, to still others who prefer the balance of coffee and milk achieved in a classic cappuccino, to others again who drown the coffee in caffe latte quantities of milk. All of these practices influence not only what one prefers in a blend, but also approach to brewing. Those who habitually dump a couple of spoonfuls of sugar into their demitasse or cappuccino, for example, may prefer long extractions that accentuate body and bitterness.“

„The largest demographic of espresso drinkers is made up of people who don’t even like coffee. Let’s face it, many espresso drinks have so much other crap in the cup that you can’t even taste the good stuff. People named Chad and Margo—who drive BMW SUVs and push their daughters (Arianna, Alexis, Riley, Mercedes, etc.) around in Cannondale, carbon-fiber, full-suspension strollers—would rather not even drink caffeine. Their Yoga instructor says it misaligns their chakras.“

There are instructions on the elements of home brewing, and other facts flavoring your coffee-drinking experience. Of particular interest to those playing Around the World with their coffee bean purchases is an informative chart in the Coffee/ Origins section detailing harvest months and output for the major coffee producing countries in the world.“
