Tea & Coffee 11/02 - Herbal and Flavored Tea Invasion ()

„As Linda Smith from Divintea in Schenectady, New York notes, “An herbal infusion refers to a single herb or a blend of herbs, most often they are caffeine-free, infused in boiling water (steeped for 3-5 minutes or longer for fuller flavor). Flavored teas are true tea leaves, camellia sinensis, scented or flavored with either an essence or something like orange or lemon for flavor. Earl Grey is a scented or flavored tea which consists of scenting the leaves with the essence of Oil of Bergamot. Tisanes are often associated with their medicinal properties, for example drinking Chamomile for relaxation or to reduce stomach distress.“

„Herbal infusions are prepared similarly to black teas, using boiling hot fresh water and steeping for approximately 5 minutes or more. The longer herbs steep, the more intense the flavor. You may remove the herbs upon reaching your desired taste or leave them in to strengthen the flavors (A stronger brew makes a better iced tea).“

„I have very successfully used canned (!) coffee from Cafe Du Monde or French Market, both available in cans in supermarkets, both are coffee and chicory. (Chicory is a caffeine-free herb whose roots are dried, ground, and roasted and is used to flavor coffee.) I also have had great luck with fresh grinding my own beans without chicory. I often use Peets House Blend beans that I grind between drip and French.“

„"The majority of people are drinking it for the caffeine infusion, they're not drinking it for the flavour. A lot of people that drink coffee insist they don't like the flavour of coffee at all." A poll taken by a Chicago-based coffee company supports Mr. Newell's belief. More than half of the coffee drinkers questioned - 58 per cent - said they don't like the taste of coffee but they drink it for the buzz.“
