Tea & Coffee 11/01 - Trends on German Coffee Market Coffee Shops Gaining Ground ()

„They are especially focussed on younger consumers in the big cities or in cities with a university. It started in the early 1990s with the Italian roasters Lavazza and Segafredo, both of which operate today some 100 espresso bars. Coffee shops and other espresso bars followed, many of them were operated by small private roasters. Today there are some 215 of these outlets all over Germany.“

„Italy has a highly fragmented market dominated by traditional cafés. The three main coffee roasters (Illy, Segafredo Zanetti, Lavazza) have all entered the Italian market through their own coffee chain concepts. Coffee chains in the French market are mainly composed of coffee bar concepts put forward by large roasters, such as Segafredo Zanetti (Segafredo Espresso) and Nestlé (Café Nescafé).“

„These days it seems most of the big R&G boys, especially those out of Italy, sell pods. Illy, Lavazza and segfredo all have pods. In Italy the roasters have quite a bit of sway with the machine manufacturers. Most of the roasters opperate a system where by a cafe signing up to a two year contract with a roaster for supply gets a machine "at cost" or even for free (for duration of contract of course!)“

„Just about every wine book that comes out these days promises a fresh approach to the subject, but most are monotonously alike… Every once in a while, I come across a wine book that has something new to say, or at least a new way of saying it." -T.J. Foderaro HOUSTON CHRONICLE "Even if you know wine, do these names flow as effortlessly off your tongue as a vintage port into a decanter? Ycoden-Daute-Isora, Sforzato, Auxerrois and (gulp) Königsschaffhauser Steingrüble? Finally, a guide for the linguistically challenged (which includes me)." -Michael Lonsford MINNEAPOLIS STAR-TRIBUNE "If imported wines leave you tongue-tied, then you'll look forward to Diana Bellucci’s book How To Pronounce French, German and Italian Wine Names.“

„As well as the expansion of domestic trade, German roasters have been very active in the export market and though much of the trade has been directed to other Members of the European Community, shipments to Eastern Europe have increased considerably. The domestic market became even more competitive during 1994 and 1995. Price reductions reflected not only world market falls but also a narrowing of margins in a period of dampened consumption.“
