The Seattle Sustainable Coffee Campaign will focus public attention on the social and environmental issues brewing in our coffee and highlight sustainable coffee choices, including organic, shade-grown and Fair Trade Certified coffees. Upcoming campaign events will feature noted environmentalists, visiting coffee farmers, and musicians Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Browne, and Keb Mo -- plus the many concerned Seattle consumers, roasters, and retailers who have built a groundswell of support for sustainable coffees. „The Fair Trade minimum price for organic coffee is $1.41 per pound, resulting in more income and improved health care, education and housing for coffee farming families. Additionally, the Fair Trade label means that farmers are given direct access to U.S. markets, which eliminates many intermediaries; that farmers are provided credit and signed contracts so they can plan for the long-term; and that the coffee was grown using eco-friendly techniques.Despite a strong commitment to the Fair Trade philosophy, the double-certified Green Mountain Coffees that will be offered at Wild Oats will be priced consistently with current coffee offerings in the stores. In addition, a number of Green Mountain's Fair Trade coffees have been highly rated by independent third-party specialty coffee tasters. „Under the fair-trade program, farmers receive a guaranteed minimum price of $1.26 per pound for conventionally grown coffee and $1.41 for organically grown coffee. The price of conventionally grown coffee on the international market is about 42 cents per pound while organic coffee prices fluctuate between 65 cents and 85 cents per pound, the groups said.“
