Tea & Coffee 02/02 - The Starbucks Experience Going Global (Cont) (#)
„After all, a share purchased in 1992 at the IPO is now worth more than 16 times its original value, taking into account stock splits. As Schultz points out, a contemplative moment of relaxation over a Starbucks latte is an affordable luxury even during a recession. “I have a strong buy recommendation on the stock,” says John Glass of Deutsche Banc Alex Brown. This is the best long-term play in the restaurant/retail field I’ve ever seen.” As long as the company sticks to its core expertise, Glass is confident that the firm can continue to expand successfully.“

„JAPAN - Since it opened its first store in Tokyo’s Ginza district in 1996, Starbucks has opened 467 stores in Japan. Last year, Howard Schultz, chairman of the Starbucks group, set out plans for growth in the country with a target of 1,000 stores by 2007. But in May, Starbucks' Japanese business, a joint venture with the Sazaby Inc., announced an annual loss of $3.9 million on revenues of $467 million, according to Business Week. Starbucks seems to have expanded at a rate that could not be justified by sales or profits.“

„Already an employee in Starbucks' marketing department, Schultz pitched his superiors on the coffee bar concept, but they weren't receptive. Two years later, Schultz tried the concept himself, launching Il Giornale, a handful of Italian-style coffee bars serving the Starbucks brew. With the backing of investors in 1987, Il Giornale purchased Starbucks and Schultz was on his way.“

„in New Jersey, which does their own in-house artwork, has seen coffee packaging become more refined over the last few years. He believes that the recent changes we’ve seen in packaging have been the result of companies like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. “I think that the marketing techniques by the people like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts have taken off to such great lengths that people are looking at a package a lot closer than they ever did before.”“

„With the recent acquisition of Seattle Coffee Co., which includes the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia brands, Starbucks seems to think there is no such thing as too big. In fact, the deal, which gives Starbucks 150 more cafés and wholesale distribution to airports, hotels and grocery stores, is just the tip of the latte for the international chain. According to a recent report from Reuters, Starbucks says it will continue to spread across the country and eventually boost its number of overseas shops to as many as 15,000. “We don’t know a market we’ve ever saturated,” CEO Orin Smith told shareholders at the company’s annual meeting in Seattle a few months ago.“
