Tea & Coffee 02/02 - The Starbucks Experience Going Global (#)
„The major unanswered question is how Starbucks will fare in continental Europe over the next few years, particularly when it goes back to Italy, where Schultz had his first espresso revelation in the spring of 1983. Attending an international housewares show in Milan, Italy, the Starbucks salesman landed in a city with 1,500 espresso bars. “Buon giorno!” a barista greeted Schultz one morning, as he handed a demitasse of espresso to one customer, and then deftly created a cappuccino, topped with white foam. “The barista moved so gracefully that it looked as though he were grinding coffee beans, pulling shots of espresso, and steaming milk at the same time, all the while conversing merrily with his customers,” Schultz recalls.“

„When we were in Italy for our boy's baptism, we drank espresso every morning made in a little stovetop espresso machine (do a search for a moka brewer). It was great. If you're trying to make a great impression, get one yourself first (they can be under $20 new) and practice a lot.“

„The average age of an Italian barista is 48 years old. A barista is a respected job title in Italy. Italians do not drink espresso during meals. It is considered to be a separate event and is given its own time.“

„If you fell in love with espresso on a trip to Italy or at that wonderful expense account dinner at the top French restaurant and think you might want to 'try it at home'—you can. Making a perfect cup of espresso can be totally challenging—that's why Italians have a whole career devoted to it—barista—but here we're into multi-tasking. So, keep the day job. You can make espresso child's play thanks to a system called E.S.E.“
