Tea & Coffee 01/04 - Beyond Black: Tea Products For Health (#)
„Used for many years in South Africa to calm stomach problems and colicky babies as well as to relieve eczema and other skin conditions when applied topically, Rooibos is rich in antioxidants shown to be both anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory. Various studies have shown a variety of health problems can be helped by drinking Rooibos including the ease of irritability, headaches, nervous tension and insomnia; relief of stomach cramps and colic; treatment of hay fever, and asthma, and an overall boost in the function of the immune system. Rooibos is naturally sweet and almost nutty in flavor so it doesn’t really need any added sweetener - something the health-conscious customer is avidly trying to avoid. This is because it contains on average less than half the tannin of regular tea, the element that makes black tea so bitter.“

„The secret? “A rooibos base gives our non-caffeinated chai a solid body,” Jasmine explains. “When my customers learn that it’s rooibos, they’re sold. Generally they’ve already heard rooibos’ positive antioxidant story, and the fact that our herbal chai is organic also helps.”“

„Probably the best kept secret about coffee is that it delivers more antioxidants than even the latest antioxidant bellwether, green tea. Green coffee beans contain about 1,000 antioxidants, and the brewing process adds 300 more. The roasting process, by the way, creates its own set of healthful compounds which, like some antioxidants, are unique to coffee alone.“

„The hot topic at the conference was that coffee, already well known for it's flavour and aroma, coupled with the emotional and stimulating effect of consumption, provides a significant antioxidant contribution to normal dietary intake.“

„The commonest individual chlorogenic acid is formed between caffeic acid and quinic acid. It has been shown that both chlorogenic acid and caffeic acid are strong antioxidants in vitro (1). Coffee beans are one of the richest dietary sources of chlorogenic acid and for many consumers this will be their major dietary source (3). It has been reported that a 200 ml cup of arabica coffee contains between 70 and 200 mg chlorogenic acid whereas a cup of robusta coffee contains between 70 and 350 mg (3).“
