„Jeff Nichols points out "The large fast food chains by design try to market to the broadest customer base. Within the coffee category, this would include specialty users as well as ground and roast consumers. With that in mind, the addition of flavored coffee to the product mix would not offer that large of growth potential. Flavored coffee still only holds a 4-6% market share in the total coffee category so when considering the costs associated with the addition of equipment, cross contamination concerns and issues related to preparation/cleanup, the net yield to sales volume would be so small making it tough to justify.“

The same low-grade, musty coffees may inhabit this bag as fill the red bags of the medium-roast "original" Eight O'Clock Bean Coffee reviewed earlier, but aggressive dark-roasting does wonders for low-grade Indonesia coffees, as many a specialty roaster knows. At 32 cents per ounce, the Trader Joe's French Roast was more expensive than the Eight O'Clock Bean Dark Roast but even more intense in its bittersweet expression.“

„Based on this small sampling, Starbucks - famed or blamed as the national popularizer of dark-roasted coffees - appears to roast its specialty whole-bean offerings considerably lighter than many of its Pacific Northwest competitors. This apparent paradox should be no surprise to anyone who actually tastes American specialty coffees rather than generalizing about them. Starbucks has been moderating its roast levels in its whole bean menu for some years now, whereas many of its smaller competitors have been roasting darker and darker, perhaps in an effort to out-Starbucks Starbucks.True, Starbucks espresso and its house blend still taste mildly burned most of the time, as did the organic Sumatra reviewed here.“
