„Nestle SA sold its Hills Bros., MJB and Chase & Sanborn coffee brands as well as a coffee grinding plant to Sara Lee Corp. in December. Nestle will focus instead on building up sales of Nescafe, including a premium line introduced on the U.S. West Coast in September.“

„The big roasters, Kraft (www.kraftfoods.com/maxwellhouse ), Sara Lee (www.saralee.com ), and Procter & Gamble (www.folgers.com ) roast most of their products for the common taste which is designed for other brewing methods than espresso even when the coffee is called “French.” There are few espresso blends produced, fewer still of the big brand products are ground for use in an espresso-maker. The bigger roasters in the U.S. are making comparable quality products to those made by commercial roasters in European markets including Italy. There is one large roaster only specializing exclusively in commercial production of dark roast coffees in the U.S., Rowland Coffee Roasters Inc, Miami Florida.“

„The University of Iowa gets coffee from Starbucks and also from Superior Coffee which is a subsidiary of Sara Lee. Superior offers FT but it's at $5.00 more per pound and that's not in the UI's current contract with them. Also, it's too much money according to what they're doing now.“

The lesson here seems obvious: Why battle for pennies in the price-driven canned coffee arena when you can sell a blend that purports to be specialty at a much higher margin?“
