The Missionaries - Japan (#)

„A          Yes.  Now I think er one of the most favourite expressions of the Japanese is the expression ‘Itchi go, itchi e,’ which translates pretty much into ‘One experience, one unique moment.‘  And the reason for that is so, er such a s…a special thing, is because the Japanese are so aware of the transitory nature of things happening.  Whether it be a flower opening, whether it be er the changing of season, or whether it be the meeting of a person with one another.  We can never, ever repeat an experience again, make it exactly the same.  We, 2 people might meet for the 1st time and the 2nd time they meet, it will be a little bit different.  They didn’t know each other the 1st time, but the 2nd time they have already some insights into each other.  A meeting, a tea gathering is er special, because we may never have a chance to see that person doing the Tea Ceremony, or that person using certain utensils that er we saw at that ceremony.   The utensils might not be available or the experience of the tea room might not be the same.  It might be a cloudy day, which changes the whole temperament of our meeting together.  And so the Japanese especially, and I think it’s a good philosophy of life.  The Japanese especially are aware of this one experience, one, unique moment.  And I think in some ways, for all of us, it ought to be er, a consideration, because if it were, maybe when we have a conversation with people, we would listen more carefully, because we may never hear that person again, or we may not hear the insight they had at that moment, or we may not understand at a later time what they were trying to tell us in the beginning.  So ‘itchi go, itchi e’ – ‘One unique moment, one special experience,’ is something that applies to a lot of life in general – but it is one of the favourite expressions of the Japanese culture. „Centuries ago, Buddhist priests developed a ceremony based on their belief that tea was spiritually linked to the peaceful ideals promoted by Buddhism. With passing generations, the Japanese tea ceremony, known as chanoyo, became a more elaborate tribute to tea and established itself as an important component of Japanese culture. But unlike many other forms of serving tea that focus mostly on the drink itself, this ritual is really about the ceremony–everything that leads up to the brewed tea. The objective is to purify the senses and cultivate harmony and unity between the surroundings, the people, the utensils, the tea, and anything else involved in the ceremony,“

Tea & Coffee 09/00 - Tea for 2000 Garden (#)

„And just as in a traditional Japanese tea garden, the visual effect of moving water and its gentle trickling sound added an important dimension to the garden. Amongst the plants and in the formal areas of water, we placed traditional granite lanterns and water bowls, used in Japan to offer guests fresh running water for cleansing the hands and mouth before a tea ceremony. Water ran smoothly along canals and emerged in gentle bubbles over granite balls. A gray granite Zensi Gata lantern lent an eye-catching contrast to the graceful star-like leaves of the Japanese maple and the full white flower heads of Vibernum.“

„You could arguably criticize the set for lacking a chashaku and natsume and matcha itself (IIRC); it can't claim to have everything you'd need for a tea ceremony. Now that I think about it, tea people could probably debate exactly what elements would constitute "everything you'd need for a tea ceremony," but I can't imagine those wouldn't include a chashaku and natsume.“

The book also provides the reader with valuable historical insight about the development of the tea ceremony.“

Tea is the one food that is most recognizably associated with ritual and ceremony. It is a small yet luxurious ritual that an immigrant can turn to for the warmth and reminiscence of a distant home. Tea represents both the prestigious and the common and is found in the shanties of the ghettos as well as the pantries of the wealthy.“
