Amazon.com: Books: Jancis Robinson's Guide to Wine Grapes
(#)
„(As an added guide to the wine a grape might produce, the Guide includes an easy-to-use visual aid: a horizontal bar with a band which shows the range of quality, from ordinary to superb.) Robinson also shares much fascinating wine history, her deep insight into the wine industry, and more important, her own judgment on a wine. And Robinson does not hedge in judging a wine: discussing Carignan, France's most planted red wine, she comments "Its wine is high in everything--acidity, tannins, color, bitterness--but flavor and charm. This gives it the double inconvenience of being unsuitable for early consumption yet unworthy of maturation." And for Trebbiano, the most planted white grape in Italy (and with Ugni Blanc, which is the name of the grape in France, the second most planted white grape in the world), Robinson notes "the word Trebbiano in a wine name almost invariably signals something light, white, crisp, and uninspiring." Perhaps most important, this portable book can be used in the store as a buying guide. With Robinson's Guide, simply find the grape variety on the label--or, if not listed, turn to Robinson's unique Grapes Behind the Names appendix in the back--look up the entry on that grape, and you will discover everything you need to know to make an informed decision to buy or pass.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/isbn=0198600984/ - Cached
JAMA -- Cranberry Juice and Adhesion of Antibiotic-Resistant Uropathogens, June 19, 2002, Howell and Foxman 287 (23): 3082

„To the Editor: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) account for more than 11 million physician visits annually in the United States and have become increasingly resistant to first-line antibiotic therapy.1 Recent evidence suggests that consumption of cranberry juice beverages is effective at preventing UTIs,2-3 although further studies are needed to validate potential treatment effects. While early research focused on a mechanism of urinary acidification, the largest clinical trial to date found no evidence to support this.2 Recent studies suggest that cranberry proanthocyanidins (condensed tannins) may inhibit P-fimbriated Escherichia coli from adhering to uroepithelial cells,4 the initial step in development of UTI. The effectiveness of cranberry proanthocyanidins and cranberry beverages against antibiotic-resistant E coli, however, has not been previously tested. We assessed whether consumption of cranberry juice cocktail prevents adhesion of antibiotic-resistant uropathogenic P-fimbriated E coli to the uroepithelium.“http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/extract/287/23/ 3082 - Cached

„So, while productivity goes up, methane in relation to productivity as a proportion goes down. " The missing knowledge, however, has been the understanding of the direct effects of the condensed tannins - diverse compounds, present in wine, apples and cocoa as well as some pasture species - separate from their nutritional effects. "We've never been able to demonstrate up till now the direct effect of particular tannins," Dr Lee said. Big wind In the latest trials, AgResearch scientists, Drs Garry Waghorn and Michael Tavendale, were able to separate out the direct effects of particular condensed tannins from their nutritional effects in the legume lotus.“http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/low/science/nature/ 1972621.stm - Cached

„Antioxidants are compounds that help clean harmful compounds from the blood. Tea contains several different types of antioxidants in the polyphenol family, including catechins, flavonoids, tannins and theraflavins. Flavonoids comprise an important sub-group of the polypheonols and green tea leaves contain high levels of flavonoid compounds, among them catechins (flavinols), and a related flavonoid, flavonis, is found in both green (unfermnented) and black (fermented) tea leaves. These and similar antioxidants are found in fruit and vegetables, but one or two cups of tea provides a similar “radical scavenging environment” as five portions of fruit or vegetables.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0804/tea.htm - Cached

„ Blessed by high altitude and plentiful rainfall, Nilgiri tea is something of a revelation, an unusually bright, fragrant and mild tea that contains fewer tannins than most other varieties. Considered a well-kept secret, Nilgiri tea is now acquiring a growing international fan-base, best expressed in the U.S. Nilgiri Tea Society, the creation of tea author James Norwood Pratt and Nilgiri native Devan Shah of Chado Tea and India Tea Importers in Los Angeles, Calif.“http://www.freshcup.com/2004_sep/ sep04_india_tea.htm - Cached
„The scientific reason for the cloudiness of tea is the precipitation of the tannins in the tea that occurs when the tea is cooled. Cloudiness does not affect the flavor of the tea.Stronger brews tend to cloud more readily than weaker onesHigh quality teas cloud faster than othersHard water also has a clouding affect on teaAdd a small amount (1/4 cup) of boiling water into the brewed tea to help reduce the amount of cloudiness.“http://www.mrcoffee.com/faqs.aspx - Cached

„There's also the "red wine" kenyas, with blackberry, cherry flavors, an added hint of acetone in the nose, moderate acidity, and sometimes a strong note of allspice. The roast flavors can be quite bitter with tobacco notes (think "firm tannins"); but I much prefer those that have caramel flvors down there (think "soft tannins')“http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/coffee/general/ 40218 - Cached

„The body doesn't absorb iron quite as easily from non-meat sources, but you can enhance absorption by combining them with a food rich in vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, blackcurrants, green leafy vegetables). In contrast, tannins found in tea reduce the absorption of iron. Therefore, it's better to have a glass of orange juice with your breakfast cereal than a cup of tea.“http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/healthy_living/nutrition/ life_adolescence1.shtml - Cached
„Also, have one pot dedicated for black tea, another one for green tea, and one for herbals if you enjoy them. Black tea will leave a patina of tannins inside the pot that can slightly cloud the flavor of a green tea brewed in the same pot. It isn't necessary to use soap when cleaning out the pot, but if you do make sure that the soap is rinsed completely out.“http://www.peets.com/.../ tea_methods.asp?sid=d29320c4c6e79499ae6ec3359aa2a837 - Cached
