„Eager to capitalize on this growing trend are the coffee growers of Nicaragua, ideally situated in the prime coffee growing region of Central America. Although Nicaragua produced over a million bags of coffee per year during the 70s, that output had fallen to somewhere around half a million by 1990. The disruption in between was the Sandinista revolution, which caused many growers to abandon their farms outright and flee the country. The Sandinistas nationalized a great number of coffee farms, and proceeded to plant beans and corn instead.“

„If everyone in the supply chain were benefiting this would not matter. As it is, with farmers getting a price that is below the costs of production, the companies' booming business is being paid for by some of the poorest people in the world,' says a recent Oxfam report.“

„It is considerably easier to convert farms to organic agriculture when the farmers never used chemicals in the first place, a common history in Nicaragua. Similarly, the preponderance of small growers in Nicaragua has encouraged implementation of Fair-Trade certification, a program whose bold little black-and-white seal assures buyers that growers have been paid a "fair" formula-defined price for the coffee, and that it has been produced by farmers organized into democratically run cooperatives. Four of the ten coffees reviewed here are also Fair-Trade certified.“

illy supports, practices and promotes fair trade and for many years has been working with coffee growers to improve both the quality of the green coffee and the economic situation of those who grow it. illy is not a member of the formal Fair Trade Association, instead choosing to educate and train and reward its growers so they can increase the value of their production by producing a higher quality product. In this way, the benefits are greater and longer lasting. Further, illy pays a premium price—as much as 100-120% above market—for the quality coffee it acquires.“

„Quality means profits and today, growers who have worked with illy since the beginning are recording significantly higher profits. The company launched the Illy Coffee Club, whose membership is comprised of the growers who supply illy and whose loyalty is encouraged by awards and tangible benefits for quality maintenance. In 1990, coffee growers asked one another, "How many sacks did you produce?" Today the question is "What type of coffee do you produce?"“

„Successive years of low prices on the world coffee market mean that growers and their families in countries like Nicaragua and Tanzania are not able to cover their costs of production and afford the basic necessities of life. It is clearly imperative that the major coffee companies engage with Fairtrade to address the increasing poverty and hardship that is the direct result of low world coffee prices, as proposed by organisations like Oxfam (Mugged: Poverty in Your Coffee Cup, 2002).“
