Mr. Coffee Café Frappe Maker Review ” The Gadgeteer
[The Gadgeteer] The drink is very frosty and thick at first - rather like a Slurpee. The ice was the consistency of perfectly shaved ice. I didnt have a single big chunk of ice in my drink. The drink does melt faster than the Starbucks version. Mine didnt completely melt, though. There was still a lot of ice left in my last sip. I would imagine that Starbucks uses some sort of thickening agent to help theirs stay thicker longer. And I should note that this recipe made enough drink to completely fill a 16 oz red plastic cup with a little left over. Starbuck’s says this is 2 servings, but it’s about the size of the grande drink I get at Starbucks.

A Little Update, Vegetable Lasagna, and Starbucks
[Escape from Obesity] . I didn't think I could justify THAT. I looked at the junkier cocoas without real chocolate in them... 140 calories in a cup. But then I would have a huge container of cocoa on hand and I have a *thing* about chocolate: it disappears within hours of entering my house... and I have been known to actually mix up brownie batter using hot cocoa mix when I was desperate. I picked up a bag of hot cocoa mix. I walked around the aisles with it in my hand. Finally I set it down and got out of there. Yes, I considered getting the "diet" hot cocoa for 25 calories, but I've had it before and I didn't like it. So I just left. After I paid for my groceries and got into my car, I thought, "way to go, self. I'll just go home and have hot tea instead." And then as I was pulling out I saw the OTHER Starbucks down the street with its LIGHTS on!! It looked open. I started towards it, I peered closer, then I said to myself, "quit it, just go have your tea" and I went on past without looking to see for sure if it was open. I came home and had Pumpkin Spice tea with a bit of skim milk and agave nectar, and it was very nice and comforting.

Espresso Glasses
[Petunia Bloom] Yesterday I was still bummed about breaking my espresso shot glasses. Ryan wanted me to run to Starbucks and get him a little afternoon treat. I went to the location on Memorial and 71st. When I went through the drive-through I ordered and then asked if they sold espresso shot glasses. The employee said they would check. When I pulled up to the window, a man peeked his head out holding an espresso shot glass that they use in the store and claimed they didn’t sell any retail but they would sell me some the use in their store. I asked how much, and he said $1 per glass. OMG–First of all, that was the type of glass I wanted in the first place; Second of all, if you are to buy espresso shot glasses anywhere else for retail you are likely to pay around $10. I was so excited!! That is what I should have done in the first place- try to buy them from Starbucks. FYI if you make espresso at home!

Starbucks and Store Closings: How will it affect the experience?
[Untitled] It remains to be seen whether these closures will impact the customer experience in a negative way. If going back to the customer experience is really what the Starbucks “Transformation Agenda” is about, then one wonders where increasing the number of store closures fits in. If the stores that remain open are staffed to the proper levels so customer service doesn’t suffer, this may help the experience in the long run.

Starbucks to Quit Music Distribution, Keep Serving Coffee
[Cult of Mac - News and opinion about the Mac and ipod communities] That’s somewhat unfortunate - Starbucks always had some really good CD collections and compilations to peruse while waiting for your coffee to be prepared. I even admit to buying some of their old Motown and classic soul/r&b compilations, not to mention some of their excellent selection of jazz (folks like Monk and Coltrane lived on Starbucks shelves).

[Starbucks Gossip] And, there is a way you can tell whether the coffee is getting low, and that's just by looking at the clear glass window on the urn..When the liquid in the window gets low, you move and rebrew another as a backup, or you stage it to where you can start brewing as soon as it runs out(If you are low on urns for whatever reason)..As a partner, I have started to ignore the critics, because most of them are just frustrated that Starbucks won't ever be dead, and that as soon as the recession is over, Starbucks will be positioned for success, becuase we are getting all the kinks out now. No matter what we do as a company, people will whine, because we're a big corporation, and as we all know, big corporations are bad, according the commies in the media, and the "commies" that tend to be the main people critical of the company..When the new changes start to result in more sales, and a higher stock price, you won't see Wall Street saying anything about how the coffee tastes..

Starbucks Now Accepts "Laissez Faire":
[The Volokh Conspiracy] Any good libertarian would say that Starbucks should be free to have the rules say that anyone up to and including Howard Schultz gets a cut of the tips and potential employees are free to decide to work there under those conditions or work at the other stores that would obviously pop up to employee baristas who don't want to share tips if the market really "thinks" that's a superior solution.

[Strategic Name Development Product Naming Blog] Talk back: Do you still care about record stores? - With Tower Records closing its stores, it looks like most record store brand names are going to die off and Whitney Matheson wants them to stay, wondering "Once they're gone, how am I going to judge a city — by the size of its Apple store?" I have written about the demise of Tower before and believe that it probably will stay as an online brand name but I feel Whitneys pain.

Costco, Starbucks and Fair Trade Coffee
[Business Ethics & Corporate Social Responsibility] One of the questions that keeps nagging me, and also helps me justify our patronage to Costco, is whether or not there is value in supporting a company like Costco that is making positive steps (big ones in my opinion) as a matter of pushing issues into the public eye more rapidly and effectively. The best scenario for my wife and I would be to give our money and time to only small local businesses that support issues that are important to us, such as Fair Trade, organic farming (includes produce and poultry/meat), fair-labor apparel companies, and other like organizations.

Philly Indymedia: NYC Starbucks workers vs. Anti-union policies
[Starbucks Union] Starbucks barista Peter Montalbano, of the 9th Street and 2nd Avenue Starbucks, said management found out about union activity at their store after a non-union worker was “fired unjustly over a scheduling nightmare.” Following the workers termination, he said, people took direct action to protest, such as having customers bombard the store with phone calls, emails, and paying in all pennies. That was the point at which store management found out about union activity, Montalbano said.

Subliminal Starbucks
[Shopping Blog at ShoppingBlog.com * Shopping Trends and Hot Products *] Cityrag.com raises an excellent point when it asks: "Has anyone calculated the amount of free advertising Starbucks is getting from all the photos that make the rounds of today's hottest A-List celebrities holding tight to their cups?..." It has to be over a 100 millions bucks as they're getting both free endorsements from the most expensive stars AND free placement as the photos make the rounds in the thousands of media outlets, from TV to magazines to websites. We spent a short time collecting photos from the past few months, and found more than we could possibly post...

[Retail Worker | Labor News - by for and about retail employees] Starbucks Barista Fired for Union Organizing New York - On May 28th at 6:30pm Starbucks workers are demonstrating their right to join the Industrial Workers of the World - IU/660, also known as the Retail Workers' Union. Workers of Starbucks at 2nd Ave and 9th Street are demanding an immediate stop to all anti-union activity, reinstatement of Sarah Bender and Alex Diaz, affirmation of our right to organize, a living wage for all employees, guaranteed hours with the option for full-time status, consistent scheduling, an end to under-staffing, the right to organize, and respect from our bosses. "In New York City we start at $8.25 an hour and are lucky to receive anything above 20 hours a week. Starbucks is Built for Growth
[Rain City Real Estate Guide] I ran across this interesting article on how Starbucks manages their real estate. Corporate real estate is not my usual thing, but I thought the insights were quite interesting and show how important location is to the Starbucks brand. Starbucks is a concept driven as much by real estate as it is by coffee and the coffee experience. These days Starbucks opens at least three new locations a day somewhere in the world. It has taken a lot of real estate to open up 9,000+ Starbucks locations and it will take even more real estate to reach their stated goal of 30,000 global locations. The blog entry quoted above is from a review of Built for Growth by a former EVP of Real Estate with Starbucks. In the book, the author describes how “Starbucks gained market dominance through finding the best real estate locations.” While not surprising, its interesting to hear the different ways that location has become an intergral part of Starbucks growth...

New York Magazine: A Union Revolution is Brewing at Starbucks
[Starbucks Union] Feature Baristas of the World, Unite! You have nothing to lose but your company-mandated cheerfulness. By Anya Kamenetz Nothing seems amiss at Starbucks Coffee Store No. 7356, on the southwest corner of Madison Avenue and 36th Street. It has a nice view of a nineteenth-century Gothic Revival church. The familiar aroma of dark-roasted Sumatra curls through the air. Most of the staffers are no older than teenagers, but none betrays the slightest hint of sullenness”or simmering political rage. “Here you go, sweetie,” says a barista in blonde pigtails as she hands a grande iced chai over the counter. Youd never suspect that this little island of repose in the crush of midtown is a revolutionary cell. Unbeknownst to its customers (or “guests,” as theyre called), store No. 7356 birthed the first-ever campaign to unionize a Starbucks”a movement that renegade baristas hope will spread through the chains 6,668 other U.S. outlets. The battle has been heated (in fact...

Institutionalizing Repeatable great customer service
[Emergence Marketing] Let's try to find a better word than "institutionalizing." Agreed, though about Starbucks - yesterday I saw one employee training two other employees. They were being "assigned" to observe the baristas at work and take notes...Do you know their recruitment campaign invites people to "create the experience." You are right - their strategy is very deliberate and they hire people who are more likely to deliver great service vs. those who would require "institutionalizing." Springsteen Lyrics Too Much for Starbucks
[Writer's Blog -- WritersWrite.com] When you hear about song lyrics being too racy or too off-color to be played in a mainstream setting, you think more of the 2 Live Crew incident or the Eminem ruckus of a few years ago. Bruce Springsteen doesn't really come to mind. But Starbucks has backed out of a deal to sell the Boss' new album, Devils & Dust once they heard the lyrics to the song "Reno." The lyrics describe an encounter with a prostitute and discuss what she charges for a certain act which the Supreme Court recently ruled is now legal in Texas. Newsweek reports: Critics generally are hailing the CD, which was released last week on Co-lumbia Records, a Sony Music label. It is the only Springsteen album to carry a parental warning (Adult Imagery) due, ap-parently, to "Reno." The episode appears to be the first time Starbucks has declined to stock an album by a major act because of concern over lyrics, notwithstanding the warning sticker. The java juggernaut, with almost 6,400 outlets in the U.S., has become an...
