„This year, for example, Starbucks will buy a million pounds of Fair Trade coffee, less than 1% of the company's total purchases. For its part, Starbucks resents being picked on. "If you were really sincere, for example, about doing something about GMOs in food, you wouldn't protest in front of Starbucks," says Mr Smith. "You would go to your supermarket, where 70% or more has GMO content, and try to make your case - because that could make a difference." „On the other hand, coffee drinkers should have no problem finding alternatives to the two rather mediocre main-menu Starbucks blends reviewed here. Smaller specialty roasters offer lots of medium-dark to dark-roasted offerings of impressive quality, and Starbucks itself produces some excellent alternatives in its "Commitment to Origin" series. (Look for the special displays of bagged wholebean coffees scattered among the other paraphernalia at Starbucks locations.) Apparently the coffee folks at Starbucks put their passion into these often outstanding limited releases (see, for example, Starbucks Serena Organic Blend, February 2004) but may be tempted to buy by number when faced with the challenge of acquiring the massive volume of coffees that go into the often sad and listless versions of the blends on the main Starbucks menu.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=88 - Cached

„And, unlike those corner cafes, which can often double as restaurants, licensed bars, tobacconists and occasionally venues for gambling, Starbucks will stick to serving just coffee and pastries. In its bid to break into the French market, Starbucks has linked up with Grupo Vips, the foodservice operator that works in neighboring Spain with well-known retail names such as Gino's Pasta & Pizza and TGI Friday's. The two companies already work together in Spain, where Starbucks has 15 shops in Madrid and Barcelona. „Based on this small sampling, Starbucks - famed or blamed as the national popularizer of dark-roasted coffees - appears to roast its specialty whole-bean offerings considerably lighter than many of its Pacific Northwest competitors. This apparent paradox should be no surprise to anyone who actually tastes American specialty coffees rather than generalizing about them. Starbucks has been moderating its roast levels in its whole bean menu for some years now, whereas many of its smaller competitors have been roasting darker and darker, perhaps in an effort to out-Starbucks Starbucks.True, Starbucks espresso and its house blend still taste mildly burned most of the time, as did the organic Sumatra reviewed here.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=84 - Cached

„Or that coffee supplanted alcohol as a favorite breakfast drink in Britain in the late 1600s, and later became a patriotic American beverage after the Boston Tea Party? Pendergrast also details the rise and fall of regional coffee brands in the United States, the role of advertising in the industry, the global economic impact of coffee prices, and the recent emergence of specialty-coffee retailers--Starbucks, for example. Finally, he explores the social and environmental ramifications of coffee and highlights recent attempts to encourage a livable wage and environmental protection in coffee-producing nations such as Brazil. Pendergrast also includes an appendix on "how to brew the perfect cup." This wide-ranging book is a good read for those curious about the history and context behind that morning cup of coffee, as well as for those strictly interested in the business side of the industry.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0465054676/ref%3dnosim/ lexico - Cached

I tried to get a general rundown of as many drinks as Starbucks offers, and their relative fat and caloric content but was told they can only provide me with the numbers for specific menu choices. „Jammed full of facts, figures, cartoons, and commentary, The Coffee Book covers coffee from its first use in Ethiopia in the 6th century A.D. to the dramatic rise of Starbucks and other specialty retailers in the 1990s. Written with verve and filled with little-known facts, the book explores the process of cultivation, harvesting, and roasting from bean to cup; surveys the social history of caf society from the first coffeehouses in Constantinople to Renaissance French cafs to beatnik havens in Berkeley and Greenwich Village; and tells the dramatic story of international trade and speculation for a product that can make or break entire national economies. The book also examines the industry's major players -- General Foods, Nestl, Proctor & Gamble -- revealing how they have systematically reduced the quality of the bean and turned a much-loved product into a lifestyle.“http://www.tips-on-coffee.com/ print_version.php?s=5360 - Cached

„Dan Cox, owner of Coffee Enterprises, thinks that the fate of Starbucks in Europe depends on its cultural savvy. “If they go in with the attitude, ‘We’re Starbucks and know it all, we’re bringing good coffee to the heathens,’ then I think they’ll be in for a surprise.” But he points out that if Starbucks is more astute, it could do quite well, offering its 100% fine Arabica blend, since the trend in Europe has been to increase the amount of inferior Robusta used in blends. Norwegian Alf Kramer, the co-founder of the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe, is cautious in his forecast. “Europe is a continent with a huge variety of coffee cultures, and Starbucks will have to adapt to all of them.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0202/coffee2.htm - Cached

„Four coffee cooperatives in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas have complained that U.S. environmental group Conservation International is trying to gain control of their harvests to sell to companies like Starbucks and Coffee Company International.Sixto Cruz, a spokesman for cooperative Triunfo Verde, told that the situation is one more act of "trade imperialism or 'Yankee coyote-ism,'" which is further impoverishing some 28,000 families who grow coffee in the central region of Chiapas. Cruz believes the organic coffee grown in Chiapas is of higher quality than the beans from Vietnam or even Colombia, two of the world's largest producers. Organic coffee growing enabled this area to dodge the negative effects of the coffee crisis that began in the late 1980s and has knocked market prices down to less than the cost of production.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 2554.html - Cached

„You have more options at a place like Starbucks than one more akin to Tim Horton`s. Yet Starbucks still has the McDonald`s factor where you can trust that one Starbucks will provide your favourite drink whichever corner you find yourself on (my first trip to Manhattan validated the reality of the "Starbucks on every corner" joke: there actually were about 5 Starbucks within 7 blocks on the same street). Of course, coffee outlets do not share the garish colour scheme that fast food restaurants, including Tim`s, use deliberately to deter overlong stays. “http://www.coffeecrew.com/support-forum/ page_48.html - Cached
„So one reason coffees are blended in the commercial world might be the use of lower-quality coffee in the blend. Another reason might be to create a proprietary or signature blend that leads consumers to equate a particular coffee profile with a particular brand image; consumers don't often call Starbucks by the origin names used in the coffee but simply as "a cup of Starbucks" as if the dark carbony roast tastes were somehow exclusive to that brand. Coffees are also blended to attain consistency from crop year to year. This is done with major brands that do not want to be dependent on any specific origin flavor so they can source coffee from the least expensive sources.“http://www.sweetmarias.com/blending.html - Cached

„In some cases the qualities of the green coffee carried through into the dark roast with startling clarity. The Orleans Coffee Exchange Yirgacheffe and the Starbucks Guatemala Antigua, for example, lost almost none of their individuality in the conversion, and even may have added some nuance. In other cases, the Orleans Coffee Exchange's Costa Rica for example, the coffee's qualities (clean, clear profile, powerful but understated acidity) translated into dark roast terms pleasantly, but not identifiably. In other words, I would have had trouble positively identifying the coffee as a Costa Rica in its dark-roast incarnation, but in retrospect I easily saw how the Costa Rica clarity and power worked itself out in parallel dark-roast terms.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=17 - Cached

Starbucks can be a bad corporate citizen, especially with their heavy handed legalistic attacks against other companies, and even individuals. I especially don't like the fact that Starbucks has taken other people's ideas and claimed them as their own (one example is the infamous Joe Magazine idea that was pitched to them, they rejected it, then a year or two later started up a, you guessed it, Joe Magazine concept without paying due to the originator). It is a pretty safe bet that when you walk into a Starbucks, and there are about 25 of them in the region, that you are going to have an experience that is virtually indistinguishable from any other Starbucks experience anywhere. Consumers don't often call Starbucks by the origin names used in the coffee but simply as "a cup of Starbucks." It is as if the dark carbony roast tastes were somehow exclusive to that brand. For me that walk to the neighbourhood coffee shop was a welcome interlude: the reasons being the walk down on a balmy summer morning, the exchanged pleasantries with the friendly staff (I believe that after I left, they seemed concerned about my welfare in the light of the then tense Indo-Pakistan situation), the consumption of the coffee itself in the Styrofoam cups with the thick brown paper bands to facilitate their holding in the hand - and of course the bonding with my daughter. Successful companies, such as Nordstrom, Starbucks, Saturn, and IBM, discovered that the best way to differentiate one product from another--clothes, food, cars, computers--was to add service.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0875848192/ - Cached
