Coffee in the News (#)

„We highlight and summarise the best articles from the mainstream press.Summaries from August - September 2001 The 'invasion' of American-style coffee bars caused quite a stir in the English broadsheets. Guardian, 4 August 2001 In August the Guardian ran a feature by Joanna Blythman on the scathing reaction by some to the proliferation of Starbucks, referring to a website "where you can have a global gripe about the coffee chain you love to hate and give it a good kicking in the company of disgruntled independent café patrons. The article questions why Starbucks perseveres in what seems to be an oversubscribed market when it could open shops in Asia for a fraction of the cost. It then points out that coffee is the second fastest growing UK market after mobile phones, having expanded 55% between 1997 and 2000 with the prediction of a further 22% growth per year till 2003 (the presumed saturation year).“

„   Starbucks' size and influence make it a huge magnet for both positive and negative attention and commentary in the United States, but in Costa Rica, the company is now the single largest buyer of coffee altogether, purchasing serious quantities at excellent prices and supporting quality on a vast scale. Fulmer and Williams both made it clear that those who call themselves specialty roasters have an obligation to pay fair prices if they and their customers want to drink great coffee. They sent a clear message that those (be they large institutional or short-sighted micro-roasters) who delight in today's low C market are voting for misery and social unrest at origin and shrinking coffee consumption at home.“

„   This level of brand discipline is typical of larger chains, but it’s worth noting that Starbucks, the world’s largest coffeehouse chain, uses a variety of color schemes, fixture designs and seating options while maintaining strict branding standards related to the company’s product, menu, display, and beverage preparation. Starbucks spokesperson, Lara Wyss, says, “We want the stores to have a similar look and feel, but we work very hard to incorporate design elements that will make each location unique and locally relevant. It is important to find a balance between overall consistency and subtle differences to make it relevant to a particular community.”“

In keeping with the company’s unconventional approach to business, Equal Exchange is glad to have direct competition for the first time, even specialty coffee powerhouses like Starbucks and Green Mountain.“
