South America ()

„The most famous regionalmarket names are Antigua, from the countryside west of the old capital of Guatemala;Coban, from Alta Verapaz, a district a hundred or so miles northeast of Antigua; and theless celebrated Huehuetenango, from a district about a hundred miles northwest of the oldcapital. The Antigua coffees are most famous, but some specialty roasters feel that theyhave become inconsistent owing to the complacency of many of their producers, and preferthe similar but lesser-known coffees of Huehuetenango. Some shops may advertise theirGuatemalan coffees by grade; the highest grades are strictly hard bean, indicating coffeesgrown at altitudes of 4,500 feet or higher, and hard bean, indicating those grown between4,000 and 4,500 feet. Well-known Guatemalan estates include San Miguel, Capitillo, SanSebastian, and Los Volcanos.“

Coffee drinkers: The crisis is far from over. Prices may have risen, but barely to cost of production in Central America. On coffee farms and villages that long before prices plummeted were sources of the cheapest labor, children are still dying of hunger.“

Costa Rican Coffee Costa Rican Coffee

„Costa Rica has set the standards for fine wet-processed coffee for the rest of Central and South America.  The most famous coffees by region are Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Herediá, and Alajuela.  Most Costa Rican coffee comes from a hybrid called caturra and is characterized as bright and full bodied.  Other popular varieties are Mondo Novo and Catuai.  The best coffees, which are grown above 3,900 feet, are designated as "strictly hard bean".  The "good hard bean" classification is given to coffees grown from 3,300 to 3,900 feet.“
