CoffeeGeek - The Latte Gambit (#)

„Cipolla says that when he began roasting, the norm in Seattle was espresso drinks that were "either bitter and burned or smoky and extremely strong. We saw an opportunity in the marketplace to bring espresso closer to its historical culinary flavors." But the scene was changing quickly as cafes and roasteries continued to multiply in the Northwest. By the mid-'90s, Starbucks was adding hundreds of stores a year to its empire. With its emphasis on milk-based espresso drinks, the company single-handedly put the word "latte" into the popular lexicon and made the consumption of espresso-based drinks a daily habit for millions of Americans.“

CoffeeGeek - SCAA Boston Day Two, Baybee! (#)

„I had to get to the Barista championships, but I sat around for a bit, and learned that some of the things I heard about relationship coffee can be overcome. It's a real challenge for small roasteries to establish direct relationships at times because of the substantial risk involved. For example, you usually prepay a fair amount, sight unseen for the coffee, and then wait and hope it's going to be top notch. Discussion focused on how to overcome some of those risks, and I wish more of the micro-roaster owners I've spoken to in the past could have attended this - who knows - it could make a huge difference in giving farmers a living wage.“

CoffeeKid - The subject is coffee! (#)

„I was at NASCORE in Portland three weeks ago, covering the show and judging in the Pacifc Northwest Barista Championship (Kyle Larson's espressos in the competition are pictured above), and I was given six different coffees by some top end roasteries to take home and try. All were espresso blends. I had Hair Bender from Stumptown Coffee Roasters ; Dancing Goats from Batdorf and Bronson , two different blends (Paladino "Competition Blend" and a new experimental organic blend) from Zoka Coffee , Vito's Blend from Doma Coffee , and another blend from a roaster I can't recall at the moment.“

CoffeeGeek - Why I like Bodum (#)

„In those first heady weeks, I must have drunk about a pound's worth of coffee a day. It wasn't cheap - I still didn't know about micro-roasteries, arabica beans, or the effects of oxygen and age on roasted coffee, but I did luck out in that half a block away from my shared house, there was a coffee shop that sold "fresh roasted" beans and their prices were good. Still, I was spending about $50 a week those first few weeks on coffee beans, money I didn't really have.“

Tea & Coffee 09/01 - Smaller Companies Thrive On Bar/Cafe Business: Why? (#)

„So, why doesn’t the multinational industry buy out the small competition? They do, but the rate of disappearance of small independent roasteries although rapid in the 1980s became a very slow erosion in the past decade. Many of the small firms are family companies that are now holding tight to what they have. Also, many of the small firms are happily realizing good profitability and barring chaos in the green coffee world, can proceed quite nicely on their own.“

CoffeeKid - Things I love about coffee and espresso (#)

Intelligentsia Coffee: In Chicago, there's only one place to go. Intelligentsia and it's owner, Doug Zell, get the nod from me on this list for several reasons, but one stands out - Doug hosted a prototype event that will soon be the model for many more espresso and coffee aficionado gatherings across the US and Canada - his "in tune" feelings with the consumer are the model that many other roasteries and cafes would do well to follow.“

Tea & Coffee 04/03 - Private Label Continues to Evolve (#)

„“Private label has been around a long time, but I think it’s been classified as branding for a lot of roasteries,” Lusareta said. “But I think the way it’s changing is roasters, such as our company and others, are realizing that you’ve got to do something to help your customer. And by promoting their name on the label and helping them brand themselves is the way I think the business is actually changing.“

CoffeeGeek - Roast-your-own coffee business goes green (#)

„"A few lucky people in Canada live next to local coffee roasteries, but these are few and far between," Solomon explains. "For people who like their coffee fresh, almost anywhere in Canada, there really is no alternative to roasting your own."“

Tea & Coffee 09/01 - Smaller Companies Thrive On Bar/Cafe Business: Why? (Cont) (#)

„Like many Italian roasteries, Caffe Vicere is a product of WWII recovery - it was founded in 1947 - and like almost every Italian coffee company it is a family affair as intensely bonded as most Italian families in general are themselves.“
