„Dickinson added "We fear that the P&G decision will disappoint as many struggling farmers and concerned consumers as Starbuck's Fair Trade announcement several years ago. Neither company seems willing to honestly address the fundamental inequities inherent in the world coffee trade. If the likes of P&G and Starbucks, with their massive resources, can't commit to Fair Trade for even 1% of their coffee, their announcements appear more marketing driven than substance."“

„In 1986 Equal Exchange introduced fair trade to the U.S. coffee industry as a way to create better living conditions and more opportunities for struggling coffee farmers in poor countries. After years of slowly building the fair trade market Equal Exchange has recently been joined by over 100 companies who now offer at least one fair trade certified coffee. The company hopes to duplicate this success within the cocoa trade.“

„Fair Trade certification guarantees consumers that the coffee they purchase comes from democratically organized cooperatives of small farmers that were paid a just price for their crop. This arrangement stands in contrast to the situation of millions of other coffee farming families who have struggled during the last two years as world coffee prices have reached 100 year lows.“

„However, there are over 300 fair trade registered co-ops around the world with 550,000 farmer members. With little or no participation by other US coffee companies these farmers can only sell a fraction of their crop on fair trade terms. For example, one Equal Exchange partner in Peru, COCLA, produces over 18,000,000 pounds of coffee annually, but can export just 15 percent of its harvest on fair trade terms. They must sell the rest at much lower prices and on worse terms.“

Under fair trade farmer cooperatives are paid at least $1.26 per pound of coffee, and $1.41 for organic coffee.“

„This movement isn’t about positioning your PR campaign, it’s about farmers and families and their ability to put food on the table. It needs more coffee companies to boldly step forward and declare that they care about the people that grow coffee and want to pay a price that helps them earn a living wage.”“
