„Absorption of carotenes is less efficient than retinol but they are more affordable and thus a significant source of vitamin A in developing countries, if they are consumed. Consuming fruits and vegetables should be promoted in all developing countries because they supply carotenes and other important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants important for good health. Not consuming fruits and vegetables also is in the top ten health problems contributing to the global burden of disease. Protecting local sources of fruits and vegetables that are collected from the bush or forest and introducing new crops high in carotene (e.g., orange sweet potato) are essential to sustain and improve the supply of carotene and ultimately vitamin A to households.“
